Hello all,
My search has taken to the do Rego Baldaia family. I have yet to find a reliable source of information, is anybody able to point me in the right direction?

As an aside, when I started all of this, I was hoping to find my father's family, instead I am finding the most interesting information for my Azorean side. Being so new at research I stumble, fall, start over, it's all good.

I have sent my DNA to more labs than I care to admit and spent more money than my husband will ever know! Recently I sent my DNA to EthnoGene for a Genetic Heritage Assessment. This comes in the form of a book (you pay $29US). I wasn't expecting much and I know that this type of testing is till new and not very reliable, but it was just for fun. I received my book about a week before I made the connection with the do Rego Baldaias. Last night as I was doing some research, I was a bit surprised. The Baldaias, from what I have found, come from Asturias and Porto. My results below:

Hi Leonor,

Some of us here have ancestors from the family Rego Baldaia. Who is your ancestor?

He's my 12th.

There's a big tree on Geni, if you have an account go check it out.

Leonor,

Be careful with DNA testing companies. There are many newer (scammer) companies that are popping up all over the place now. They like to play off of the major company names, so you need to be really careful. The ones that are used by genealogists (and are reputable) are: Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), My Heritage, Ancestry, and 23 and Me (although they are more health focused). Living DNA is newer, about 2 years old (and reputable). They are based out of England. Their focus is to try to tease apart the areas of Britain and then get into the rest of Europe. Because my dad is half Portuguese and half British Isles stuff, I did him there. He has a whopping 2 matches. His ethnicity (for the British subregions) is interesting. As for his Portuguese half, they called him 23.6% Europe (South) - Iberian Peninsula and 23.5% Europe (North and West) - France.

As for your results from the company you posted about, they are probably in the ballpark if you are 100% Portuguese. Many Portuguese people do get Spain. Spain is a political border. Historically, Spain and Portugal were part of the Iberian Peninsula and all part of the same set of people (way back when). The companies have not yet refined it enough to tease it apart (they may be able to and they may not. Time will tell). Many Portuguese also get French as well. Your DNA is probably Frankish, like my dad's. If you don't remember that period of history, looked it up in Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franks

Also, many Portuguese get some African too, so your trace amounts make sense.  Cheri

Hi Cheri,
Thank you, yes, I am aware of the scammers out there, as I said this was more for fun. I THINK I am 100% Portuguese but who knows where my father's father came from, lol. This search is going to take me forever. What I found interesting in my results were the Asturias and Porto results. My father was born in Aljezur (in the Algarve) which a lot further north than Porto. I had never even heard of Asturias.

Thanks Angela.
I am aware of that tree, however, the dates do not make much sense to me. There is also one on Geneanet both trees are contradicting.
