I have been using DNA testing since the mid 90's, first with The National Geographic project and later with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). Over the years I found a few interesting ways to relate matches to a side of the family. I tested both my father and his 1st cousin. They are both related on my father's father side . The benefits of this is that if there is a match with my father I always check the matches of his first cousin. If his first cousin also matches then the common ancestor is on my father's  father side. if either my father or his 1st cousin do not match the the common ancestor is either on my father's mothers side or his first cousin's mothers side.

Another case I have tested my wife's half brother and am now in the process of testing my wife. They both share the same father. If a match is with one but not the other then the match is with their respective mother. If they both match then it is related to their father's line.

So if you have a family situation as this then, it is worth the cost of adding a cousin or a half sibling to your Autosomal DNA testing.

Also whenever doing a test always test the oldest possible tester that will achieve the desired results.

The reason I use FTDNA  for all my DNA testing, is they are the only testing company that offers both Mt-DNA and Y-DNA testing in addition to Autosomal (Family Finder) testing. Family Tree DNA is having their annual Summer Sale presently and offers savings on bundles and single tests.

Thank you very much for sharing such a helpful and informative message.

I now regret not having used FTDNA. I tried MyHeritage and Ancestry, which enabled me to confirm one parentage assumption and to bridge one gap, but not much more beyond identifying dozens of known Jacome cousins in New England and Toronto.  

On my paternal grandfather's side, I have many lines from Achada, Achadinha and Fenais da Ajuda that end early due to the lack of parish records or gaps therein. I am considering doing Y-DNA testing. My patrilineal line ends in Carlos de Sousa Frois (RR 381), so maybe I'll be able to go further back.

My mother-in-law shares DNA with your father and his cousin, and the connection comes from their common grandfather.

I suppose their Y-DNA is from Bretanha. Have you learned anything interesting from their haplogroups?

I ordered the yDNA test for my paternal uncle (non-Portuguese), since my father was deceased, in 2004.  My maternal grandfather (Portuguese) passed away when I was 4 years old....he had all daughters.  There wasn't DNA testing when my grandmother died, but guess I should do the mtDNA test.  I did the Autosomal DNA Test at FTDNA for myself and my uncle as well but I also tested on Ancestry since so many of my cousins have used Ancestry.  Yes, FTDNA is the only place doing mtDNA and yDNA.  While I've traced my paternal line (non-Portuguese) back to 1768, and have the proving documentation, with the yDNA test, we didn't match one single line with the Bowers surname!!  The few we've matched have various odd names, but FTDNA says country of origin is England, Wales & Scotland.  That has been puzzling!  Your suggestion was very helpful.  Thank you.
