I am sure this has been discussed before, but no matter how I searched I could not find an answer. I am working to "clean up" my family tree. I want to be consistent with surnames. I have some de Bettencourts for example showing under de, some under Bettencourt. I am tempted to ignore the de when alphabetizing, but my big stumbling block is my own maiden name. We went by De Salles. Always under the letter D. I am thinking of not using the de for index purposed unless I know for sure the family used it in America - De Costa, De Freitas, De Salles etc. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.Gerri Martin

This is the method I use and suggest. My Genealogy program allows me to enter other names such as AKA. That way I can enter the first name and the de, do, da dos as the first name and the just the last name under the last name. I can also enter an AKA name with the last name with the de, do, dos, da that way I can search both ways I can look for “Mello or de Mello” both will be there. This program is great also for the never ending name change that woman have You have a woman using Maria de Jesus in one record, Maria da Conceicao in another and Maria Soares in yet another All name will be in the search list. As Cheri said use a top line stand alone genealogy program as you cannot do this in the on-line programs.

I used to have to use the slashes to separate the names in Family Tree Maker. I am not sure about the latest edition of Family Tree Maker.
