Hi All,

I have been searching through baptism records about the time my Great Grandfather was born. The only tangible record I have is his passport application and it stated he was 27 on June 11, 1882. Based on that record and the email from Margaret V (9/2/2020), I have focused my search on Ribeira Grande, Parish Nossa Senhora da Conceicao.

I looked at records at this link https://tombo.pt/f/rbg02. All page numbers are based on using the tombo.pt viewer.

The Baptisms for 1853-1859. I assumed he could have been born anytime from June 12, 1854 to June June 11, 1855. I found three records but do not understand Portuguese enough to translate and see if I am on the right track. Page 33 (lower left) has a Jacintho and looks like the name Antonio Tavares and maybe 8th of November 1854. Page 54 has Jacintho but I could not see any other name. I think it says May 1855. Page 61 has a Jacintho but it looks like August 1855 which may be too far.

The Marriages for 1870-1879. Again using their ages as a guide. Page 42 Number 18 record has Jacintho Tavares and Margarida Julia (my great grandmother’s name on the passport application was abbreviated and could have been Maria or Margarida Julia). Date looks like November 1872 which would have made him 18 years old at the most if one of the birth records I found  above is correct.

If someone can help me translate, I would appreciate it. I just need to know if I am on the right track.

V/R

Mike

Mike T,

Try again. You posted the link to the cover of the book. You need to navigate to the image itself and provide those links. Please don't ask people on the list to hunt down the record. Make it super easy by posting the link to the direct record(s) and you'll get more help that way.
Thanks for understanding,

Hello Mike,

Did a bit of searching on the baptisms you posted and others and read that they were given to be raised in N. Sra da Estrela, Matriz, of Ribeira Grande.  That lead me to think Jacinto may have gotten married elsewhere….. after poking around, found it in Sao Pedro, Ribeira Seca, Ribeira Grande.

N.o 6 Jacinto Tavares and Maria Julia da Encarnacao [as per the passport also]

Date of marriage:  Jan 26 1878

He is a farmer/field worker, 23 years old, single, natural and baptized in the church of N. Sra da Conceicao of Ribeira Grande and residing in Ribeira Seca.

She, 22 years old, single, staying home, natural and baptized in the church of Sao Lazaro of Agua d’Alto, Council of Vila Franca do Campo, and residing in Ribeira Seca. Legitimate daughter of Victorino Lopes, natural of the parish of N. Sra Mae de Deus, Povoacao and of Mariana Filomena do Carmo natural of the parish of Sao Miguel Arcanho of Vila Franca do Campo.

With reference to the baptism/birth record, because the marriage does not make reference as to whom he was raised by it makes it difficult to determine exactly which Jacinto was his, as I found three in close proximity year 1955/56 and all given to be raised in Estrela, Matriz, Ribeira grande.

Hope this helps you go on from here,

Cheers

Margaret v.

My apologies. I reposted with links. Margaret V just hit the nail on the head.

I was fortunate that Rosemarie had the Portuguese Hawaiian Memories book. In it are two captions of my grand uncles (Grandfather’s brothers). They confirmed that Maria Julia Lopez was incomplete – Maria Julia da Encarnacao Is the correct name.  They also confirmed she was from Agua d’Alto.

Many thanks to Margaret V and Rosemarie.

Pam must have had a real long day at work. She sent me the correction and not the list.

An exposto (male; exposta is female) is a foundling or orphan. The baby must be alive in order to be baptized. You can't baptize a deceased baby or person.

I guess Pam was thinking falceu (for died/passed away) instead of foundling. Don't know. Like I said, maybe she had a long day.

Glad 6 was correct, Mike.

Have what I think is the baptism for Jacinto and the reason for this is that most expostos that were received into a good home and raised as one of their own  until adulthood would in most cases take on the name of the family.  In this case Tavares.  See bottom left,

Jacinto, Exposto, given to be raised by order of Ribeira Grande’s City Hall, nursemaid Albina Julia wife of Antonio Tavares, parishioners of Our Lady Estrela of said Town, … baptised on the 8th day of the month of November of 1854 in this Paricha of Our Lady of Conceicao of the referred town…
