Hi,

As I was searching from the death record of my ancestor, Maria de Faria, in the parish of Pedro de Miguel, I noticed an unusually high number of deaths on consecutive days, including my 9th great-grandmother's:

https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FAL-HT-PEDROMIGUEL-O-1703-1719/FAL-HT-PEDROMIGUEL-O-1703-1719_item1/index.html?page=23

While searching for more information, I stumbled upon an article by Maria Nobrega Amorim (attached):

Translation:

Between September 1, 1704 and August 31, 1705, 189 people died in Pedro Miguel, compared to a total of 37 births. Although no data are available on mortality rates for the first five years of the century, in the five years following the crisis (1706–1710), an average of 15 people died annually in Pedro Miguel. This supports the classification of 1704/1705 as a major crisis, according to the criteria of Del Panta and Livi-Bacci.

The severity of the crisis is more vividly illustrated by the parish priest of another parish on the island of Faial, Castelo Branco, who reported that from early June 1705 he ceased administering last rites to the dying due to the lack of holy oils in the parish and across the entire island. Graves were dug in the churchyard, and in one instance, five bodies—a man, two women, and two children—were buried in a single grave. At the height of the crisis, two bodies were often buried in the same grave.

This is heartbreaking.

At sixteen her soon, Filipe de Maria, was an orphan, married Agada de Medeiros in Horta, soon after became a widower, and then moved to S. Jose, Ponta Delgada, where he married Ana da Silva, became a widower again but eventually had children with his third wife, Maria de Sousa, and now he has many descendants all over the world.

Dear Carlos,

This is of prime interest to me as both Pedro Miguel and Castelo Branco are the primary locations of my ancestry!
Thank you for this,

Hi thank you for sharing this. We are from Faial, and my fathers ancestors were from Pedro Miguel and Cedros. I did see this as well in my family history. So very sad.
Not too long after, there was an eruption on nearby Pico. I can’t help but think what folks endured at this time in history.

Carlos,
Your Maria da Faria is also my 9th great grandmother!  I descend from her daughter Joana (1684-1752).  Since the majority of my ancestors are from Pedro Miguel I checked my family tree and during the time frame of Sep 1704 to May 1705 I found that 20 of my ancestors had died.  I also have 10 ancestors from Cedros who died during that time frame.  Thanking for sharing the information.

Hi cousin Veronica,

I am always happy to find new cousins, however distant. But let me tell you, this was not an easy task. In none of Filipe de Faria's records in S. Jose, Ponta Delgada, including death and marriages, or his children's records, did the priests ever stated his parish; they only mention that he was from Faial, but since his name and his first wife's name (Agada de Medeiros) were not that common, I gave it a shot. Driven by stubbornness more than patience, I went through all the parishes of Faial until finding his first marriage right in the Mother Church of Horta, São Salvador. This record led me to the parish of Pedro Miguel.

Our shared ancestor, Maria de Faria was the daughter of Francisco Pereira (Sarmento) and Barbara da Silva, and she was baptised on June 9, 1660 in Pedro Miguel:

She married Francisco Joao, son of Bartolomeu Joao and Isabel Nunes, in Pedro Miguel, on July 17, 1678:

I shared the link to her death record in the previous message. These records are also attached here. I have not been able to find her parent's marriage record, and that is where these lines end. Please let me know if you have more information.

Veronica, the Azoreans are resilient people. Even as recently as 1998, an earthquake, followed by a fire, destroyed the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, in Pedro Miguel, which had a unique architecture with :

In 2023, they've finally restored the church of this parish:

The second interviewee is named Manuel Faria, maybe our cousin :-)
