I was wondering if anyone knew where the NETTO surname comes from in
the Azores. From my family research, I think my g.g. grandma Luzia
NETTO immigrated from the island of Grasiosa, which I found on her
death certificate. However, I don't have any other information about
the town or if Grasiosa is the correct island.

Thanks,
David

David,

Some surnames are concentrated in certain areas or on certain islands and some surnames can be found all over the place.

I have found Neto/Netto on Sao Miguel island.

I have several grgrandfathers with Neto/Netto as the surname. They all come
from the island of Sao Jorge the Norte Grande area.

David:

I believe the name NETO is an adopted name. For instance, a Joao Silva's grandson would have changed his name from Joao Silva Jr. to Joao Neto ("neto" meaning "grandson"), and the descendents thereafter kept the name Neto.

I've never researched my Neto line, but I think it's an alcunha too.

I've seen this name in the baptisms for Sao Jorge several times.

David,
The Netto/Neto surname undoubted got it's start as a nickname or alcunha. "Neto" means grandson and would be appended to the "real" surname (example: Manuel Silva Neto would be the grandson of Manuel Silva). The son of Manuel Silva may have been known as Manuel Silva Filho (filho means son). Sometimes the Alcunha sticks, becomes the surname and the "real" surname is dropped.

All that being said,  I would venture to say that if you traced your gggrandmother's line back a few more generations you would find a case similar to what I have described. Furthermore, these situations happen on all the islands so that it is probably not likely that you could really confirm the island of origin of the Neto surname.
good luck,

Hello David
All that has been said about the the Netto (Neto) is true.
However, In S. Miguel, according to Carlos Machado, the name dates back to at least the mid 1500's as a surname in the person of Briolanja Netto, daughter of the Joao Alves Netto, "juiz do mar" in Angra at the time of her marriage and according to Mr. Guill there is even a family armorial for that surname, indicating an even earlier origin.
Just my two cents worth.
Hope that helps.
Hermano
