Can anyone tell me what the Portuguese name for Mitchell would have been?

I could not find it in any of the Portuguese Surnames Anglicized Lists on the Web.

Thank you,
Vivian

Vivian,

We had a family member, not from the Azores, whose name was Michael and he changed it to Mitchell.

Hi E,

I mean the last name was Mitchell.  First name is Ernest born on Pico don't know the date yet.  His father was born in the Azores and his name was Antone Mitchell.  I wanted to know what the real Portuguese Surname was for Mitchell.

The closest phonetically would be Maciel or Miguel . There is no set pattern of anglicizing names.
I've seen immigrants take the name of the ship captain because it sounded American, or their employers name, or a neighbors name.

Vivian,

I don't think it was an anglicized, I think it was just corrupted.

If "M" is the first initial, maybe Medeiros or Machado (in addition to what the others said).  I'm just basing that on the shape of the words.

So my family got it backwards.  It was changed from Machado to Mitchell?  They had told me that it was changed from Mitchell to Machado.  I will try the Machado last name and also will try the Medeiros last name and see what I can find.  Thank you, Vivian

Okay I think I get it now.  It could have been any name that may have began with M?  I will have to do some more research and ask a few more questions of the Cousins.  Thanks, Vivian

Vivian,

It would have been changed from Portuguese to an anglicized version.

I chose Machado by looking at the letters in Mitchell.  M, t, h, and l have a height to them.  In Machado, M, h, and d have a height to them.  However, the positioning is not the same.

If you have a family story that states Machado, I'd start with that.  And quiz the cousins.

I was just hoping that it starts with an M.  That is not always the case.  There are Portuguese people with the name of Quail whose Portuguese names are Coelho.  To hear the two word phonetically, you would hear a similarity, although on paper, it's quite a different thing.
