Does anyone know if there are passenger lists for people leaving
Boston and returning to Azores? I just discovered that my grandmother
traveled back to Sao Miguel at least once and possibly two times
between her first arrival in 1903 and her last arrival in 1907. I'm
having difficulty finding the arrival circa 1906.

I now have subscribed to Ancestry.com but can't find a data base with
this information.

Thanks.

HI MaryAnn,
I don't think that there are any lists like the one that you're looking for. What I did find was 2 passport applications for my husband's grandfather on return trips from the Acores. He made several trips back and forth. I also found him on the Boston and New York passenger lists once again returning from the Acores. All my info was found on Ancestry. Good luck!

Hi Joanne,

Was your husband's grandfather a US citizen (or naturalized) and therefore had to have a US passport to travel back to Azores/Portugal or did all immigrants who travelled back to their homeland have to apply for a passport?

Thanks.

Hi,
I think that he was naturalized but the page that I saw was from Ponta Delgada not the United States. He was requesting from the ?consulate in the Azores for permission to return to the US. Now that I'm putting this in writing, it seems rather strange. Perhaps Cliff or Eric can explain it. I'll have to go back to see what I have. After a while everything in geneology seems to run together.
At this point in time, I'm researching my grandparents in Sao Pedro,Sao Miquel, my husband's grandparents from Rabo de Peixe as well as my grandparents from Ireland and England. Some nights I forget what country I'm in. Good luck. I'll check that info that I gave you and get back to you.

Hi,
I found it under US Passports in Ancestry.com. It's from the US consulate in Ponta Delgada. He was naturalized and had been in the US for several years, then went back to the Acores and was now returning to the US. I'm not very computer literate but I tried to attach a copy to this note. It should show up at the very bottom.

Hi,
I'm looking for information on my great grandfather on when he returned to the Azores. He wasn't naturalized. Would he still be on the list on Ancestry.com?

Hi Pat,

I did a quick check and it looks like this site lists only those who were naturalized . I'm looking for my grandmother's info when she traveled in 1906 and couldn't find anything (she was naturalized in the 1940's and did not travel back to the Azores after she naturalized).

Hi Pat,

Just to clarify the list I'm referring to is the US passport list and it's now obvious to me that you wouldn't receive a US passport if you weren't a US citizen (duh!).

So I tried a different approach and searched the passenger lists by reversing the port of departure to Boston and the port of arrival to Azores but I only get a list of passengers from Azores to Boston. I can't believe there isn't a passenger list for people returning to the Azores. It's so odd. But perhaps one exists in the Azores.

From what I can tell, you had to be a citizen in order to apply for a passport.  One of our families returned to the Azores for a visit (husband, wife, 6 children).  Only the children who were born in the US applied for passports and I found them on Ancestry.com.  The parents and children who were born in the Azores were not listed.  You had to show your NA/birth record in order to apply for a passport.  So, unless they were NA, they would not be listed on Ancestry.com.

If they returned to the Azores and then returned again to the US, your best bet is to try and find them returning on a ship's manifest.

Thanks, Elaine. I'm still trying to locate the 1906 trip back to the US and not having much success but I'll keep trying!

Mary Ann:

I, too, like Joanne have found ancestors going back and forth on the passenger manifest lists on Ancestry.com.  I don't know if the following link would be of any help, but I'll pass it along anyway.

If you could get into the website CENTRO DE CONHECIMENTO DOS AÇORES, then  click on right -hand side where it says "passaportes". These are the records when our ancestors applied for their passports and gives names of parents and where they were traveling to.    I was able to find ancestors when this first came out a couple of years ago.  Then the site was down for a long time.  Now that they have added all sorts of good information, I only get in so far and it says "404 error message."

However,  maybe you will have more luck or know how to work the computer better than me.  I don't know if anyone on the list has been successful in getting into passports  and knows if perhaps it's a firewall that's not letting me get in.  I got just so far and then couldn't open the page.

However,  I hope you are able to or someone can help with this.  My idea was to see if you could find your ancestor when they applied for a passport.  It gives the names of parents also.

Maria Elena

Maria Elena,

I could be your firewall.  So far, we know that if you use Internet Explorer or Safari (I think it's Safari) you can see the passaportes.  If you use Firefox and I suppose Opera, you will get the 404 error.  That goes for trying to see anything on the CCA web site.

Hi Maria,

I have searched the passport documents on Centro de Conhecimento Dos Acores but will go through them again. I did find my grandmother's request for passport for her 1907 trip (the last one she took) but I'll continue to search the files. Her name is Ernelinda Leite Barbosa - so at least I'm not looking for a more common first name. Thanks for you suggestions and help.

Best,

Mary Ann

Cheri:

You WERE my firewall!!!

I just went to Internet Explorer and now it works.  I'm so glad I posted my problem.  I had an idea that it had something to do with a firewall and perhaps by posting maybe someone else would have a solution.  Thanks so much for writing me.

Thank you so much for all you do on this list; I can't imagine the time and effort you've put over the years in order to make this research easier for  so many of us.

I've found a De Mello in my husband's line:  Caetano de Jesus de Mello abt 1779  X  Maria Thomasia Botelho abt 1779
His parents were Antonio De Mello, abt 1759  and Antonia do Espirito Santo, abt 1759, They were from Sao Jose parish in Sao Miguel.

Caetano and Maria Thomasia  had 5 children:

Margarida Jacintha Flora (she married Antonio Jose de Lima)
Francisca de Jesus (married to Jose Jacintho Borges)
Andre de Jesus married Antonia Jacinta DE MELLO - her father was Joao De Mello x Jacinta Flora
Joachim Jose- don't have any info on the last two siblings yet.

Any connections out there?

I can get into the website and I may have found an ancestor but; can anyone tell me how to enlarge the information AND get it to be clear?

I can enlarge it but; it gets rather blurry.  Is there a solution?

Also, when I try to send the page via email the link that is sent doesn’t work.

When I try to send it to Excel only the non personal stuff makes the transition.

Any help appreciated.  Thanks, Sam in CA

Hi Sam,

Because it's a PDF file, I don't think you can send it to Excel.  Maybe someone who knows more about those programs can give more info.

Since the CCA site has moved to the current server, I can't get the images large AND clear.  On the former server, I could right click the name of the file on the left and "Save to target.." and save it on my Desktop and then launch it in Acrobat on my computer and had better control over the enlargement.  This doesn't seem to work with the new server though. :(
