Dear Ana,

Both Mathias Correia's previous wife, Ursula da Ponte, and Sebastiana de Medeiros Costa's previous husband, Afonso Correia, were buried in Furnas (back then belonging to the parish of Maia), so you may find their marriages in the book entitled “Famílias do Vale das Furnas” by Luís Miguel Rodrigues Martins.

Please bear in mind that the book contains a couple of mistakes (hope I won't get in trouble for saying this), but it's a great reference to guide you in the right direction/ parish. They might have gotten married to their previous spouses in neighbouring parishes.

Best regards,

Carlos

This a dead end line. It appears they likely married in Povoacao and the marriage records for that period are lost. However if you study baptisms you may be able to go back another generation through the god parents and/or sibling marriages.

Ernesto do Canto extracted what he could of the Povoacao records from 1707 and 1712. It's only 5 records. He probably did this in the late 1800s and put these 5 records in his books of indices. I typed these 5 up when I used Canto's indices in Ponta Delgada in the archives as they are not published anywhere else.

Only 1 Medeiros is listed and 1 Correia. Not much help, I'm afraid.
