Hello everyone!
I'm having a bit of a problem with a situation here. The couple Phellipe Sardinha and Maria Rapoza, from Faial da Terra, had two daughters Marias, one born in 1676:
and the other born in 1678:
I would like to know if anyone has ever encountered something like this, as I suspect that the first may “have left this life" briefly, as I believe the couple had no reason to give the same name to a child born less than two years after the first. The problem is that the death records for Faial da Terra do not cover this period.
It was not uncommon for families to have more than one Maria. In cases like this in adulthood they would be known by different names such as Maria da Estrella and Maria de Jesus. Then I have also seen where the first one died as an infant and they named the next girl the same name. The only way to know for sure is if there is a death record. which sadly do not exist for the time period you are looking at. If you do not find any marriage records for one then you may assume they died but then again they may not have ever married or went into a religious order.

Thank you, Phellipe, Francis, Chery, Diana...
I just need to know if my Maria Rapoza, married to Manoel Carreiro in 1696, is the Maria of 1676 or the one of 1678.
