Hello,

I descend from him [Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas], and I did the Myheritage test, but it doesn't mention specifically the YDNA relatives, although I bought the most complete test they have. Or I don't know where to find this information within the Myheritage page.

With kind regards,

Hi  Vagnervarg,

Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas lived in the 1400 and 1500s. Autosomal DNA tests (like My Heritage, Ancestry, 23&Me, and FTDNA's Family Finder) do not reach back that far. They reach back about 200 years from the testee's birth. In order to obtain some of Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas' autosomal DNA, the tester would need to be born about 1700. No one alive today was born c. 1700.

However, Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas' Y-DNA may still exist. The test taker needs to be the son of the son of the son of the son, all males all the way forward, to a living male today. A strict male line. If that's you, then yes, you need a Y-DNA test.

My grandmother (Pimentel) had at least one brother which was an all-male line back to Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas; however, he's long gone.

However, if anyone has a male line to Joao Afonso, and we matched on an autosomal DNA test, would that not be enough proof?

BTW, for Vagnervarg (I don't have the original email), I didn't think My Heritage did yDNA tests.  Do they now?  FTDNA does them though.  I had my uncle do one for my paternal (American) side and we have not matched anyone with our surname!  I've been able to trace them back with documents and our current surname to 1768 in VA but to date, have no idea what the name might have been as the few matches we have also have weird names!
