Pavao, Pavoas is one of the big original names on Sao Miguel.

CAPÍTULO 39.º

DA DESCENDÊNCIA DE AFONSO RODRIGUES PAVÃO

§ 1.º

1 - Afonso Rodrigues Pavão, alemão, um dos primeiros povoadores da Ilha de São Miguel. Veio casado com F... natural de Aragão (Vide Frutuoso, Livro IV, Cap.º XXIX).

Pavão I am familiar with.  I had never seen Povoas.  Is that a related name?

No, it's the feminixed verision which was kept as a surname. It's pronounced quite differently. Pavao, Pav (have) oo (soon) as (has) vs. Pavao Pa (have) ao (u as in Joao).

In Portuguese, PAVÃO  ( old form, "pavano" )
is the "he - peacock", and PAVOA is the
"she - peacock".
