Hi,

I'm looking for documents for my great-grandfather Manoel Cardozo Tosta who was born around February 1875.
His parents called Matheus Cardozo Tosta was born in 15/nov/1852 and Catharina Maxima de Jesus was born in 07/08/1906. Freguesia de Ribeirinha, Angra do Heroísmo, Ilha Terceira dos Açores. Portugal.

Regards,
Luacy

Hi Luacy,

The Azorean government digitized their records and put them online. You can access them through Tombo.pt here:

Here is Mateus' baptism.  It matches the date of birth you have of 15 Nov 1852.  He is son of Antonio Cardoso Toste and Catarina Vitorina who are both native of Ribeirinha also.

I don't seem to find this Mateus on the Terceira marriage index.  Could he have immigrated to Brazil or USA and married there?  Is Catharina Maxima de Jesus the daughter or mother of Manoel Cardozo tosta?  Unless I'm really missing something, your post shows her being born 31 years after her son.

I have generations of ancestors from Ribeirinha going back to the 1600s.  Perhaps we connect somewhere.

I found on familysearch.org a baptism for Valdemiro, son of Mateus Cardoso Toste and Catarina Maxima in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.  Could this be a brother of your Manoel?

Hi,

Matheus migrated to Brazil but I don't find the passport or immigration records.
Catharina Maxima is Manoel's Mother.

Luacy

Catharina Maxima born in 03/oct/1857.
Sorry my mistake!
Catharina Maxima is Manoel's Mother.
Matheus migrated to Brazil but I don't find the passport or immigration records.

Here's a plug for the Sao Jorge Genealogical Society and their passaporte index that has partial coverage of Angra.  It had Mateus' passaporte listed so I found this:

You can find the Sao Jorge Genealogical Society and its many resources here: https://saojorgegenealogy.org/.

I read closer the Brazilian baptism I previously posted and Valdemiro is not your Manuel's brother, but his son.  I believe it says Manuel is Brazilian and 37 years old and his wife is Maria de Jesus who is also Brazilian, 36 years old.  If that age is correct your Manuel may have been born in Brazil closer to 1877 or 1878 if you are still looking for his baptism.  I am not familiar with researching Brazil.

I apologize and I blame it on the jet lag.  Manuel's wife is listed Maria Jose Toste, not Maria de Jesus.

The second birthdate you gave Catarina Maxima's is correct and here is her baptism:

The link that Cheri gave you earlier in this post is a gateway to these same records I am posting if you want to research further back in the Azores.  You said you wanted documents on your great grandfather Manoel Cardoza Tosta.  What I have found only suggest Brazil to me.  Do you know if he was ever in the Azores?

Hi Luacy,
He was born 6 months earlier as mentioned in the document, in Rio de Janeiro, as his parents married also in Rio de Janeiro: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Catholic Church Records, 1616-1980; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939F-R8SM-99?cc=1719212&wc=M6ZR-HWG%3A131775101%2C131777302%2C132542301
There is a some good documentation on them on FamilySearch. Most church records from Rio de Janeiro are digitalized and, every month, I see more and more documents being indexed.
From Matheus parents above, you can find in the Marriages Terceira Island Index. I can see that e.g. Antonio Cardoso Toste and Catarina Vitorina married in Ribeirinha, Terceira, in 1832 (Lv. 5, Fl. 127).

I have also Toste (in Brazil changed to Tosta) from Terceira. Do you have a GEDMATCH?
My 3rd great-grandfather was Francisco José Tosta (Born on 23 March 1831, baptized on 4 April 1831, Santa Luzia, Angra do Heroísmo). We do not have his passport record either, but in Brazil he got married to Amélia Henriqueta de Miranda Maia in Rio de Janeiro, on 28 December 1861. He is the son of José Toste and Marianna do Carmo, both from Santa Luzia. I could trace my "Toste", in Angra do Heroísmo, up to Domingos Mendes Lourenco and Maria Toste (abt. 1635).

Hi Cael,

You are responding to something that's 5 years old. The links may or may not work.

Since they are FamilySearch links, you need to log into FamilySearch first, then click on the links.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to manually locate the records. The URL gives you the record set. Full Text search should help you narrow it down.

Your links are archival and work just fine for me.

As Cheri says, you might needed to login to FamilySearch.org first. Logins are free.
