Hello, friends!
Anybody here can help me with the surname of the late Maria Teixeira in the penultimate entry below, on the right? I suspect that she is the wife of Manoel da Costa Salgueiro.

I want to clarify whether Manoel remarried with such Barbara, since his death appears as her widower, as we see here:

https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-O-1730-1781/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-O-1730-1781_item1/index.html?page=20

The last of the nine daughters that Manoel and Maria Teixeira Furtada did had was born in 1724, named Margarida.

Hi Fabio,

I'm not sure what you mean by her surname? - Maria Teixeira, wife of Manoel da Costa Sorodeo?, died on June 22, 1735. She was about 57 years old at the time of her death.
there is no other name listed for her?

regards,
David F

 Hello, Davi!

Actually, I'm not sure about the surname of this Manoel da Costa in this death record, as one of my ancestors is Manoel da Costa "Salgueiro," husband of Maria Furtada Teixeira. As for Maria, she was listed in her children's records with either the surname Teixeira or Furtada, depending on the priest who wrote the record, as they had nine children over a 20-year period.

Now, this surname "Sorodeo" that you mentioned is very strange, in fact, it is not normal.

Hi Fabio,

Unfortunately, there are deviations in names.
Does the age of her death record match somewhat to when she might have been born?

I'm at work right now, but I believe I have this family in my tree. I will check and get back to you

regards,

David

 Okay, David!

I have Manoel da Costa Salgueiro's birth date in 1673:

https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-B-1555-1700/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-B-1555-1700_item1/index.html?page=123

So for death dates in the period 1735-1739, it was a normal date.

Their wedding is as follows:

https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-C-1696-1742/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-C-1696-1742_item1/index.html?page=17

I haven't found Maria Teixeira Furtada's birth certificate yet. They had nine children, all born in Faial da Terra: 1705 (Maria), 1709 (Barbara), 1713 (Manoel), 1714 (João), 1716 (Thereza), 1718 (João), 1719 (Izabel), 1723 (Manoel), and 1724 (Margarida).

if it looks like another Manoel da Costa...., married to Maria Teixeira, it will complicate the situation.

Hi Fabio,

For me, there is no doubt that this is Maria Teixeira.

 https://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-O-1730-1781/SMG-PV-FAIALDATERRA-O-1730-1781_item1/index.html?page=14

But it does look like the priest spelled the husband's last name as "Solocleo"-- perhaps due to the man's pronunciation of his name? I am really not sure...

Thankfully, there are people far more experienced in this group on the variations in surname spelling.  And it is so hard with a name as common as "Manuel da Costa"!

This name does look like Manuel da Costa Solgeyro, with a minor difference in spelling of “y” instead of “i”.

Again, I hope someone else with more experience in name variations chimes in. I am still just practicing...  :)

Hi, Jenni!

I'm trying to unravel this mystery surrounding Manoel Salgueiro and Maria Teixeira Furtada because it all started with a question I tried to ask here in the group about my ancestor, Bárbara Furtada, the couple's daughter. Bárbara was born in 1709 .I was having trouble reading her birth certificate, which left me with doubts, since she married Caetano in 1745, who was 16 years younger. I was very curious about this age difference between them. However, I found her death certificate from 1768, and the priest lists her as being around 60 years old, and she was married to Caetano. I tried to track down this couple's children, and I only found one, "my" João de Sousa, in 1753. I didn't find any other children of this couple before or after João. I think it was a divine miracle, because she was 43... that's rare!!!

What Cheri suggested was that she was a spinster and that her family wanted to marry her off quickly, and Caetano's family was more humble.

Barbara saved my lineage!!!

David, thank you for the information about Maria Teixeira's sisters. I'll add them to my registry. Now our challenge is to try to find something other than the couple Mr. Rolla and Mrs. Teixeira.

There is a Maria that was baptized 04JAN1685 and daughter of Manuel da Costa (Rolla?) & Maria Teixiera.  This is not in the online registries but was an entry in the Ernesto do Canto Indexes for Faial da Terra.

Fabio,

Are you there at the archives in Ponta Delgada? I know Ernesto do Canto's work was in genealogy. He was also involved in government too, but you'd want his genealogy work. I know about his indices. Years ago, they gave me a list of his indices. I typed it up. It is attached.

Fabio,

It was the PDF that I attached to the previous email. It is NOT his work. It's just an index of some of his work.

Canto did them in different formats.

I sent the main index to Canto's work that I typed up to Fabio. Here's part of it:
image.png

Let's say I want the Achada marriages for 1675-1729. I would write that on the request ticket along with 17° 2 so they know what to pull.

Then I'd get this. It's Canto's writing. The heavier, thicker penmanship is Rodrigo Rodrigues.

Canto also did 2 column formats in his work. I guess it just depended on whatever he saw fit.

Again, it was the most prominent families.

Hi all,

This group is so interesting.  I wonder if the Maria Teixeira listed here is related to my great grandmother, Clara Felicia Teixeira--she lived on Pico as far as I know (1838-1897).  She married Joseph Fernandes, who was born in the Cape Verde Islands (1832-1879), and who became a cook on a whaling ship and they moved to New Bedford, MA.
His mother was Clara Gonsalves Serpa, also from Pico as far as I can gather, and she was married to Joao Fernandes, who had come from Galicia, Spain, I think.

I went to Pico this April and went to a lot of graveyards before I discovered this group and learned of the online archives.  I have been unsuccessful so far in figuring out
how to find records on the various websites noted here.  I am going to keep trying.  The Azores are well worth visiting and each one is unique.

One very interesting thing I learned was the reason for so many people leaving Pico in the mid 1800s; the main industry was grapes and wine, and there was
a blight in 1852 that destroyed most of the grapes and thus wine production and everyone's livelihood.  Production went from 12,000 barrels per year to 100 by 1867, until
they planted other grapes near the end of the century.  Now wine is a huge part of the economy again.

Thanks,
Ellen Fernandez
