Seasons Greetings to all.

I'm looking to date a photograph that has recently been re-discovered amongst a collection of bits and pieces. I have my suspensions but do not want to give anything away at the moment as I do not want to influence any analysis.

Anyone up for the challenge?

Cheers Tony

I'd say late 19th century. It looks like a classic photo studio portrait. I can generally date these pictures to within a decade (e.g., "1890's") by hair, dress and shoe styles. But those traits in this picture aren't familiar to me. That leads me to suspect the photo was not taken in the US, and I'd further guess the family had means.

How'd I do? :)

What kind of photo is it, and what size? That info can help with dating too.

Tony, I have a book about women and children's clothing and from the pictures used, I would say 1879--1882 time frame.
For those interested, the book is called Victorian Fshions for ... by Linda Setnik. Some really nice pictures used for the examples.

G'day all,

I'm still awaiting further information from the owner of the picture and hopeful of being able to sight the original soon. The owner believes the photo to be that of our great grandfather's sisters but I doubt the suggestion given it is known that his sisters were born between 1820 and 1837. As I understand it, photography was still very much in its infancy in the 1830s so the likelihood is that the girls in the photo are not who they are thought to be.

I agree with both Linda and Rosemary that the photo is more likely taken around 1870 to 1890.

My great grandfather Manoel deAzevedo de Sousa Amarante came from the town of Manadas on the island of São Jorge and arrived in Australia in 1850. I suspect the children are most likely either his nieces or grand nieces. Certainly it is my understanding that the family were "well healed" and I suspect the photo was taken on São Jorge.

If more information comes to hand, I'll update this post.

Thanks again. Tony

Thanks Tony-- it's a really engaging mystery.

The way the studio is staged gives me the feeling that the photo is from the 1880's or 1890's, but I give weight to Rosemary's dating of their hairstyles too.

If you can look at the original photo, you should be able to get a better idea of the period it was taken.

best of luck!

:)

For those that have been following this thread, I was finally able to view the original photo but alas the back of the photo provides no clue. Notwithstanding this disappoint, I am reasonably confident the photo is from around early to mid 1880s with the girls all daughters of my great grandfather Manoel d'Azevedo de Sousa Amarante. The photo would have been taken around perhaps the Stawell or Ararat areas of Victoria, Australia. Manoel migrated to Victoria Australia from Manadas, Sao Jorge in 1853 as part of an Azorean expedition to find gold. Although there is some evidence to suggest he found some gold he established a quartz crushing business and held quite a bit of land around the Wattle Creek/Landsborough area in Victoria. I think he did reasonably well for himself. The children are likely to be from left to right Mary Frances Amarant born 24 October 1877, Teresa Ann Amarant born 28 July 1875 and Catherine Clara Amarant born 27 June 1879. Thanks to all for your interest and comments. Kinds regards Tony Amarant
