Hi --

I am starting the process of seeking Portuguese citizenship as the grandson of two Azorean immagrants to the U.S. in 1912.

One of the requirements appears to be getting birth certificates for each of them.  My understanding is that because they were born in 1893 and 1894 (on São Miguel), that there are no civil birth certificates, only baptismal records (which I have located on line).  Is this true?

Does anyone know if I now need to have birth certificates created from the baptismal records?  If so, what is the process -- and the location -- for doing that?

I will be in São Miguel for a week in May to take the CIPLE test and visit, and hope to obtain whatever local records I need at that time.

Any advice or assistance that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Yes William,
You need to obtain both your Grandparents Baptism records from the Registry in Ponta Delgada. The Registry uses the
Churches records as their data source. Documents "have to" be original with the apostile stamp on it. If your Grandparents were
married in Acores? You also need that marriage stamped document too.

The 1893 and 1894 baptisms are at the archives in Ponta Delgada at:
Largo do Colégio S/N
9500-054 Ponta Delgada

The blue pin is the archives/library. I've circled the Sao Jose church towards the left. The S.S. church south of the library is Sao Sebastiao, or the Matriz. That one is right by the "doors of the city" monument.

The archives do certification. I'm unsure if it's the apostille stamp, but I think so. I'd start at the archives first, since the record is there.

Note that the names of the streets change every couple of blocks or so.

Thanks, all.

Further question:  My grandparents were married here in Massachusetts in 1913.  What records of that do I need to produce?

I'm guessing you'd need their marriage and it would need to be certified. I'm sure the embassy has a checklist of the things that you need. Print it out and check things off :)
