Plot
The film begins with a prologue, where Elsa and Anna are young princesses of Arendelle. Elsa has the magical ability to create and manipulate ice and snow. One night, while playing, she accidentally injures Anna with her magic. Their parents, the King and Queen, take them to the trolls, who heal Anna and remove her memories of Elsa's magic. The troll king warns Elsa that she must learn to control her powers, as fear will be her greatest enemy. The King and Queen isolate both sisters within the castle, closing the gates to the public. Elsa shuts out Anna, creating a rift between them.
Years later, their parents die at sea during a storm. When Elsa comes of age, she is crowned as the new Queen of Arendelle. Anna meets Prince Hans of the Southern Isles at the coronation party and falls in love with him. They decide to get married and ask for Elsa's blessing. Elsa refuses to grant her blessing and forbids their marriage. She loses control of her powers and reveals them to everyone. She flees the kingdom in fear, accidentally unleashing an eternal winter on Arendelle.
Anna volunteers to go after Elsa and bring her back. She leaves Hans in charge of the kingdom and heads to the mountains. On her way, she meets Kristoff, an iceman who sells ice for a living, and his reindeer Sven. She convinces him to guide her to Elsa's location. They encounter Olaf, a snowman created by Elsa's magic, who dreams of experiencing summer. He leads them to Elsa's ice palace on the North Mountain.
Anna tries to persuade Elsa to return with her, but Elsa fears that she will hurt her again. She accidentally strikes Anna in the heart with her magic, which will slowly freeze her unless it is thawed by an act of true love. Elsa creates a giant snow monster named Marshmallow to chase them away from her palace.
Kristoff takes Anna to the trolls, who tell them that only an act of true love can save her. Kristoff assumes that Hans is Anna's true love and decides to take her back to Arendelle. Meanwhile, Hans leads a search party to find Anna and Elsa. He encounters Elsa's palace and confronts her. He pretends to be on her side and asks her to stop the winter. Elsa confesses that she does not know how to undo it. Hans then betrays her and tries to kill her, but she escapes with the help of Olaf.
Anna returns to Arendelle and begs Hans to kiss her and save her life. However, Hans reveals that he never loved her and only wanted to marry her to seize the throne of Arendelle. He locks her in a room and leaves her to die. He then tells the other dignitaries that Anna has died in his arms and that they are now married by law. He claims that Elsa killed Anna and orders his men to capture and execute her.
Olaf frees Anna from the room and tells her that Kristoff is her true love. They rush to find him before Anna freezes completely. Elsa escapes from Hans' men and tries to reach Anna, but Hans confronts her again. He tells her that Anna is dead because of her actions and attempts to kill her with his sword. However, Anna sees this and sacrifices herself by jumping in front of Elsa, turning into solid ice just as Hans' sword hits her.
The shock of Anna's sacrifice breaks Elsa's curse over Arendelle, thawing the winter and restoring summer. Anna's act of true love for her sister also thaws her own frozen heart, reviving her. Elsa realizes that love is the key to controlling her powers and reconciles with Anna. She lifts the banishment of Kristoff and appoints him as the official ice master of Arendelle. She also gives Olaf a personal snow flurry to keep him from melting. Hans is arrested and sent back to the Southern Isles to face punishment from his family. Elsa and Anna hug and celebrate their reunion, as the people of Arendelle cheer for their new queen.
