Hey guys, I've attached the piece for our Feb 28 session (Vartanantz).  Below is the print from Harut (my dad)..

I recommend the following talking points:

 

-The role of great leaders in shaping the destiny of their nations (and the world). (What would be the impact on the Armenian nation, if the likes of Tigran the Great, Mesrob Mashtotz, Khorenatzi, Vartan Mamigonian, Naregatzi, Shnorhali, Gomidas, Antranig and other great leaders did not exist?)

-What makes great leaders GREAT? (They are motivated by lasting values and virtues and not short term satisfaction).

-Great leaders should serve as examplary models for us, in our quest to emulate them.

-Only when we realize our shortcomings, will we be on the right track to overcome them.

 

I'll be in Big Bear next weekend (Feb. 20-22) with Homenmen. Razmig, Krikor and Araz will be there too. If other mentors would like to join, we can have a session there!!

Hey guys...Sorry I have been so MIA..I have alot to say so I apologize in advance...first off razmig..thank your dad on our behalf for the vartan mamigonian info...next...about the 28th...I think all of us are on the same page about not knowing what's going on, but, if we do postpone it then we don't get to do much until the march 7 tadron.,.but we need to send out info about that...I had an idea about the 28th,..I think it is strictly a mentor-mentee event and that's why no one from the elder's is even saying anything..this is good because it can be really informal... what we can do, is each of us contact the mentee and ask if they will be available from 11 to 1 on saturday. If we contact them, today-tomorrow we can have feedback until then. We can create a presentation type thing, describing vartan and tying in all of those concepts we wanted to introduce...again we can make it entertaining.. afterwards we can do some kind of quiz bowl between the groups, play a game or even just sit and talk with them, have lunch and call it a day. That way we have done our part. I realize that this may be too short notice to work on something, but I am willing to work on it with anyone who can help me with some ideas. I feel like everyone is just waiting for something to happen; but what? (haha)

Anyway, just let me know what you guys think and we can take it from there. Sorry about the long story...

ok...so now that these people (still third person) agree, what are we/they doing? should we prepare something or are we gonna wing it? I feel like we need to have some sort of topic discussion...plus..should I make sure that the pasadena location is available or do we want somewhere else?

Sarmen is OK with the Pasadena location. If we do it there, do we have a big enough room to do this?


The lecture idea is cool, but its too school-ish for the kids. I think we should start off by having them try and explain what its all about. Lets try and see how much they know. Then we can put in our 2 cents worth and go from there (maybe an interesting powerpoint presentation?)...I'm sure we all have good ideas, its just we need to make sure not to pass toooo much time, they'll get sick of it. It needs to be short, simple, and qualitative.

I like the quiz bowl idea as well, gets them involved. Any kind of prize we want to hand out?

We should def prep some things if this is the path we're taking. If we are going to do a lecture, then a few of us will have to sit down and come up with some topics. The handout Harut gave to us is perfect, we just need to make it more mentee-friendly.

Kathrin I'm all for helping prep for this. Who else is in? Will we do it in person? Over email? Phone?

I don't want it to be a lecture either, but some sort of framework from which we can work. We have Harut's piece to go off of, but we just need to simplify it. I will try to come up with something and send it by tomorrow.I think the Boyadjian hall should be available..I can email Dr. Karayan and ask her. I like the idea to question them first, but we need to keep in mind, the before reflections and post reflections things we discussed. I can buy small notebooks so each of them has, so that we keep everything in an organized way...It should be short..we can spend most of the time discussing rather than us speaking them listening. But...I don't remember if we decided to include a person they can relate to, were we gonna take this approach?
So I am working on 3 things...
1) The Vartananz piece to make it more mentee-friendly...I will just put some ideas together, if anyone can do the same, then we can collaborate.
2) Finding out if the location is available
3) Getting a prize and notebooks.

As far as meeting, I am sure in person would work best but my schedule is horrible this week, I have no nights off, so its gonna have to be by phone (which is prolly faster than email)...

Sorry guys...I've been busy with gennext gala planning. The gala is on friday night. I will be available on Saturday, after 12. I will get in touch with my mentees if we're doing something.

As for presenting, I'm not that well versed in Armenian History as I never attended Armenian school. But I'm a quick study so if you guys fill me in...I'll do whatever you ask.

As of right now, all I know about Vartan Mamigonian is: war, zoroastrians, persia, elephants, we lost but we persevere.

But at this point, I am seriously concernced...It is too last minute...My mentees both can't come..that is fine, I am still willing to do it, if there are people. You guys...we don't know where anyone else stands...can you guys even make it? The elders left it up to us..and at this point we are not doing anthing...We can move it to 12 so that it is good for aleen cuz she is kind of important(j/k..very important) Has anyone contacted their mentees? I agree with the idea with it being last minute.  I have not heard from my mentees yet about being able to come on Saturday.  I personally think it is way better if we are more organized and then do a good job rather than just rush it.

hey guys sorry i havent really answered any of these with my take on
it but ive been really bogged down with day to day things.

so okay thats fine this saturday is no longer, my date to meet with my
mentees was going to be saturday march 7th.. not that i know what im
going to be doing with them yet... i really dont know which is more
valuable... taking them someplace educational/fun (i cant believe i
said those two words in the same sentence) or taking them out to lunch
and having a serious convo.

and yes yes yes we shouldn't be doing everything, none of us have the
title of CAPTAIN or CEO in this thing, to keep the group meetings
going we need the input of the elders... no offense to anyone, but
that's not what was outlined to us in the beginning...

oh i also think we should have some sort of a contact list set up with
phone numbers/direct email, etc... just in case... or maybe its a bit
unnecessary. lemme know.

Heyy Guys,     I'm so sorry for being mia. I agree with everything said. I'm also in for meeting Saturday. I know that this place is pretty lame, but I had a meeting there once and we were able to stay there for a while. Its called Marie's Calendar. Its in Glendale.
