Dear Mr.Hariharan,

Around 7 years back, one of my users mentioned to me that he tried out Voice recognition in Tamil by using 'Dragon Speech' software. He spoke in Tamil to generate Tanglish (i.e. text in English like 'neengaL kooda nandru katru varalaam') and then used Azhagi's Auto Transliteration# feature to convert such text to Tamil in quick time. This is not a straightforward approach ofcourse but just informing the same here since you are interested in this area.

I understood that it was not easy for my user to generate the Tanglish text, as he had to train the software to do the same.

The history of DragonSpeech (commercial software) can be read at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_speech_recognition_software - links to some open source voice recognition softwares are mentioned here. I do not think I will find time in the immediate future to read details on these softwares, download and explore these softwares and see how suitable/good they are in effecting Tamil voice recognition vide the way suggested by my user.

(#) Kindly please click on the button 'Auto Transliteration" which you will get to see in the opening screen of Azhagi and it will give you details on how to effect auto-transliteration to quickly convert existing English texts (like slokas, etc.) to Tamil, instead of retyping them. The same info can be found at http://azhagi.com/help/azpowerautotransliteration.html too.

kind regards.

Dear Mr. Ramamurthy,

Your font name implies that it is in TAM encoding. If your translation text can be sent in plain text, then you can very well type in Unicode itself. After completion, you can convert the Unicode text into TAM encoding (and use your font for that text) using any of the converters available at http://azhagi.com/indic.html

If your work involves layout and formatting as you type along, then it is better to type directly in TAM encoding using any of the softwares mentioned in http://azhagi.com/indic.html which allows typing in TAM encoding. Azhagi supports typing/conversion in 'Tscii' and 'Unicode' encoding only (conversion to TAB is possible).

kind regards.
