AAC BOARD DIRECTORS
ESTABLISH TERM PRESIDENCY, ELECT NEW PRESIDENT,
WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS, APPROVE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF EASTERN &
SOUTHERN REGIONAL REPRESENTATIONS AT THE ANNUAL MEETING
IRVINE,
CA - In compliance with the by-laws, the annual meeting of the Board of
Directors (BoD) of Azerbaijani-American Council (AAC) was held on June
14, 2009 in Irvine, California. In presence of the majority (5) board
directors, the following decisions were adopted by the BoD quorum:
1.
Based on the proposal presented by the Board Director Dr.
Javid Huseynov, BoD voted to establish a term presidency and accept the
conclusion of the first term (2007-2009). Effective June 15, 2009, AAC
President shall be elected from among the BoD members by June 15 of
every odd-numbered year to serve for a single two-year non-consecutive
term.
2. The BoD voted to elect Dr. Ismail Rustamov
of Los Angeles, CA as the new President of AAC effective June 15, 2009.
Graduate of Azerbaijani State Oil Academy and chemist by background,
Dr. Rustamov led the establishment of Green party in Azerbaijan in
early 1990s. Since mid 1990s, he was Azerbaijani-American community
activist and became a founding board member of AAC in 2006. In
professional life, Dr. Rustamov is the author of a number of patented
scientific inventions and currently leads the R&D group at
Phenomenex, Inc., a company which in 2008 was named at the top of the
15 most innovative and progressive small workplaces in the U.S. by Wall
Street Journal.
3. The BoD approved the candidacy of Pirouz Khanlou
of Los Angeles, CA as the President-Elect of AAC to start serving as
President on June 15, 2011. Successful businessman by career, Mr.
Khanlou remained active in Azerbaijani-American grassroots for over 25
years. In 1993, along with Betty Blair, he founded the "Azerbaijan
International" magazine, which for over 15 years remains to be the most
comprehensive publication about Azerbaijan abroad. In recognition of
its major contribution to the U.S.-Azerbaijani relations, Pirouz
Khanlou and Betty Blair are due to receive an award of the U.S.
Ambassador to Azerbaijan on July 1st, 2009.
4. The BoD approved the candidacy of Mr. M. Ali Cinar
as a new addition to the Board and as AAC's Vice President for the
states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Graduate
of Istanbul University and the University of New Haven, Ali Cinar also
completed several executive certification programs at Harvard, MIT and
NYU, and currently works as a marketing manager for Western Union. Mr.
Cinar is very actively engaged with Turkish-American grassroots: he is
a co-founder of Istanbul University Alumni Association in USA, the
member of Diaspora Advisory Board at the State Ministry of Turkish
Republic, the Board Director of the Assembly of Turkish-American
Associations (ATAA).
5. The BoD welcomed Mr. Yusif Babanly
as a new addition to the Board. MBA graduate of the Washington
University in St. Louis, Mr. Babanly is a project manager at the
MasterWord, Inc. in Houston, TX. Actively involved with
Azerbaijani-American grassroots, Mr. Babanly helped co-found Houston
Azerbaijanis association and has been with AAC since its establishment,
serving as its VP and official representative in Texas.
6. The BoD approved the candidacy of Mr. Kamran Zahid
as the new Vice President and representative of AAC in the states of
Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Graduate of Azerbaijani State
Oil Academy and the University of Houston, Mr. Zahid is an exploration
geologist working for Shell Corporation since 2007. As a student
activist, he founded the Azerbaijani Student Union at the University of
Houston and the Houston Club of Intellectual Games "Nizami". He also
serves as a VP for Public Relations of Houston Azerbaijanis association
since 2007 and as a Chairman of Learning and Development Committee of
Shell's New Professionals Network since 2009. Mr. Zahid is also a
member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, European
Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, Houston Geological Society
and the Houston subdivision of the World Affairs Council.
7. The BoD approved the candidacy of Dr. Javid Huseynov
of Irvine, CA as the General Director of AAC. He will also carry out
the responsibilities of organization's Treasurer. Dr. Huseynov has been
a founding Board Director and served as the first president of AAC
since 2006.

The BoD approved the establishment of AAC's Eastern Regional
representation under the leadership of Ali Cinar and Southern Regional
representation under the leadership of Yusif Babanly and Kamran Zahid
before the end of calendar year 2009.
9.
The BoD approved the establishment of the Board of Trustees of AAC for
oversight of non-profit financial operations and program compliance of
the organization. Board Directors shall identify and propose members
for the Board of Trustees by July 1st, 2009.
10. The BoD
approved the establishment of the AAC's Advisory Board of Scholars.
Board Directors shall identify and propose members for this Advisory
Board by July 1st, 2009.
11. The BoD approved the preparation of AAC's academic programs in fall 2009 and requested the Board Directors Mr. Thomas Goltz and Javid Huseynov to summarize proposals regarding their format and content by July 1st, 2009.
12. The BoD approved the establishment of AAC's quarterly publication and requested the AAC Youth Officer Ms. Uldouz Berenjforoush and the Board Director Pirouz Khanlou to summarize proposals regarding the format by July 1st, 2009.
13. The BoD accepted the resignation of Mr. Farrokh Nakhjavani and reelected the remaining BoD members and organizational officers.
