Look to the left of your motor mount to locate your Evinrude model number and serial number. You can also find your Johnson model number and serial number to the left of the motor mount as shown in the pictures below.

Look to the right side of your motor by the transom mount to locate your Mercury Marine serial number and model number. You can also find your Force model number and serial number to the right of the motor mount as shown in the pictures below. Mariner motor serial numbers are also on the right side of the motor mount.

For Volvo-Penta Sterndrive, you can find the engine serial number in one of two places depending on your model. The SX-A model features a serial number located on the back of the engine, whereas for the SX-M model, the serial number is displayed on the side of the drive.

It is strongly recommended that you locate your Volvo serial number for easy identification. This serial number will identify specifics about your motor to help you discuss parts and repairs with your Volvo Dealership. It is highly advisable to locate and keep track of the engine serial number by storing the information in your phone or computer.

Mercruiser Sterndrive Serial Numbers can be found on the flame arrester in the engine compartment. It is crucial to have the correct serial number for your sterndrive to ensure you get the right information from the manufacturer and avoid any confusion during maintenance or repair work.

Please note that Mercruiser Engines use three identification numbers. Three numbers are the main serial number, the drive number and the transom number. Each of these could be needed depending on what part of your motor you are dealing with. See our pictures and descriptions below to find your correct Mercruiser Sterndrive numbers.

Mercruiser Outdrives are identified by the drive number located on the side of the motor. This number is not only important for distinguishing one type of Mercruiser Sterndrive from another, but it also serves as a critical piece of information for repair and maintenance and drive replacement purposes. On older Mercury outboards, going back into the 50's and possibly even earlier, the serial number would generally be viewed at the leading edge of the swivel bracket, as seen in the image below. If for any reason that number may have been changed, removed, or can no longer be read, every Mercury had a freeze plug, which is on the powerhead and about the size of a quarter. That freeze plug will have a serial number on it. So long as you know your HP and the serial number, you can identify the year of your outboard.

Johnson and Evinrude outboards both work with model numbers for identification. In most cases, the model number is located on either the transom or swivel bracket. It can usually be found on a either a metal plate on earlier models or a sticker on later models. Once they switched over to the tags, this was another number that often washed out and could no longer be read. In this case, the powerhead freeze plug can be located and will have the serial number. The serial number itself won't do you much good, but an authorized dealer can use the serial number to match the engine up with a model number again.

Chrysler outboards work by a model number. There are 2 locations where you may find this number. Early Chrysler models stamped it on a metal plate and it was placed under the carburetors, inside the lower cowling, or pan. Later models used the same plate, but you'd find it on the side of the transom bracket.

Force outboards used model numbers on vinyl tags, many of which washed out. If the number washed out, you may find a small sticker either on the cylinder head cover or the starter bracket. If that fails, all is not lost. There are numbers stamped on your carburetor. Take those numbers and google them or email us. Those numbers will usually nail down a year and HP for your engine.

Your Johnson outboard model number can usually be found on the nameplate located on the motor or the mounting bracket. The nameplate should contain a serial number and a model number which will identify the year and - depending on the nameplate type - certain details of that motor and help you obtain the correct handbook, parts and service literature.

Find the serial number or code number. It will be found on the nameplate located on the outboard itself, on the mounting bracket or on the silver core plug on top of the power head. The serial number is typically a mixture of letters and numbers or a series of letters alone.

Decode for an earlier model, if the INTRODUCES code is not fitting. From 1969 to 1980, the year is in the model number by year. For example, a 1976 outboard has a 76 in its model or serial number, such as xxxx76x.

To decode motors 1968 and earlier, go to the Bombardier website for your outboard's year. It is easiest to look up the horsepower and year online. Bombardier acquired OMC and the Johnson and Evinrude brands in 2001.

Plaintiff in this case has moved for a preliminary injunction enjoining the defendant from requiring certificates, issued to the purchasers of the defendant's outboard motors, to be redeemed exclusively for remote control throttle cables. In addition the plaintiff seeks to enjoin the defendant from disparaging the plaintiff's products in violation of the anti-trust laws. The plaintiff also moved, in a subsequent oral modification of its application, to require the defendant to cease issuing certificates to purchasers of at least one of the horsepower sizes of its 1971 model outboard engines now under the certificate program.

This action is a civil antitrust action brought by N. W. Controls, Inc. ("N. W.") against Outboard Marine Corporation ("O.M.C."). N.W. is a manufacturer of remote control cables and end fittings for outboard and stern drive boat engines and snowmobiles. O.M.C. is a diversified corporation which manufactures *700 and distributes lawn mowers, golf carts, industrial vehicles, chain saws, snowmobiles, and camping trailers in addition to outboard and stern drive boat motors and accessories, including remote control cables.

The plaintiff, N.W., has alleged violations of Section 1 of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, 15 U.S.C. 1, Section 3 of the Robinson-Patman Act, 15 U.S.C. 13a, and Section 3 of the Clayton Act, 15 U.S.C. 14. Suit has been brought pursuant to section 4 of the Clayton Act, 15 U.S.C. 15, requesting treble damages for the violations. Both temporary and permanent injunctive relief have been requested pursuant to Section 16 of the Clayton Act, 15 U.S.C. 26. This Court has jurisdiction under 28 U.S.C. 1337. The defendant, O.M.C., is a Delaware corporation. Venue is thus properly laid in this district under 28 U.S.C. 1391, 15 U.S.C. 15 and 15 U.S.C. 22.

Plaintiff alleges that O.M.C. has been violating Section 3 of the Clayton Act, 15 U.S.C. 14, and Section 1 of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, 15 U.S.C. 1, by "tying" the sale of its brand of outboard motor remote control throttle cables to the sale of its electric gear shift equipped outboard motors by means of a "certificate program."[1]

Outboard motors, such as those manufactured by the defendant, are mounted on a transom at the rear of small boats. The gear shift and throttle controls may be located on the engine itself and the operator may control the boat and motor seated at the rear of the boat next to the motor. Frequently, especially when outboard motors of higher horsepower are used, control operations, steering, gear shifting, and throttling, are performed from a position further forward in the boat using control cables. These control cables are elongated flexible conduits containing freely moving core wires and have specially configured end fittings which are attached to the appropriate fittings at the engine and at the control station.
