Cde Veli

You got me working my tower. I read your response and went to get the original email from comrade Lungile, which is a mere ‘two line email’ stating only two things. I read your email again, it did not sound like it responds to the two 'lined' email.

I think we should tone down. We seem to have a brewing vitriol against each other. A slight comment from a comrade is enough to explode into a huge conflagration, but why?

I must be the first to say, it is this type of thing that makes comrades fear expressing their views because there will be the likes of comrade Veli who will come storming at them without engaging comradely with the matter at hand. This kind of thing is seamlessly separated from the notion of suppression of dissent, and is politically wrong. It is this kind of thing that makes members of AZAPO fear to engage in public (in my view). I am of the belief that we should be able to express our views with the hope and belief that we will be corrected without being ridiculed, and sent to read books of some dead Russians, whose ideas may not necessarily be talking to the current situation.

Perhaps we should find space in the organization where we will be equal comrades, not teachers and learners. We should find space where we will share ideas without proving to others that we are better read, and that others are not. We should find a space where we grow together with humility and grace.

Your email is extremely, and unnecessarily defensive. It went to some unnecessary detail, (even though thanking a response from comrade Lungile). Who else will respond to any email from AZAYO after seeing your vitriol?

Comrade Lungile’s argument to mean sounds like, we should not promote volunteerism in this situation so that we don’t nullify the intentions of striking workers – conversely, so that we see the impact of the strike to its fullest meaning, resulting in some un-governability. This is a dicey situation if you think of it, because it is Black people who suffer at the end. Definitely, comrade Lungile thought of this challenge, but at a political level might have been tantalized by a notion of seeing a government crippled by workers to the point of bowing down to their needs.

From where I am, I am not convinced that this is a pure industrial action, but a politically loaded attack by one section of the ruling alliance, proving its might to the other. As such, whatever the outcomes, it is this ruling alliance that will be victorious, without counting bodies of those who might have died in the hospitals. Thus far, 57 babies were saved by a private Netcare, for free, while 3 could not be rescued. The ICU’s have told their own sad story of loss, while tuition hours lost offered no option to the E. Cape Dep Of Educ but to postpone matric prelim exam.

Cde Lungile argues that, “... ours is to expose the true murderous of our people in the form of Zuma and his constables”.

Personally, I supported and cherished on the idea of the press statements from both Mzwandile Mcoseli Region and AZAYO. I had issues to raise in both statements, but those issues are only a matter of tactics than principle.

Perhaps it is good that I did not comment because I would be raising issues some of which have been raised by comrade Lungile, and your anger may have come my way.

Dear Comrade Dick

Thank you for the feedback on AZAYO's statement on the current public sector strike. And before we proceed to reply to the specific lines in your email, we propose to firs attend to some of the ideological nuances, implicit in your email, which may have influenced your conclusions about the AZAYO statement.

Firstly, as per its Constitution, AZAPO is a National Liberation and Political Organisation, which has as its ideological guides, the philosophy Black Consciousness and the ideology of Scientific Sociliasm. And has as one of its key objectives the establishment of a "democratic socialist republic" and is explicitly anti-capitalist and imperialist in its policy orientation. Therefore, while AZAPO is and has always been pro worker (and socialist), as your opening line correctly suggests,AZAPO is nevertheless not a Working Class or Socialist party in the classical sense. Our view, as the AZAYO NEC is that, AZAPO is essentially a revolutionary nationalist political organisation.Further more, it is critical for us to first be clear(ideologically) who we are, so as to avoid the risk of dressing ourselves in borrowed robes(ideologically speaking).

Secondly, as far as the AZAYO NEC is concerned, media statements are essentially an external communications tools, which in practical terms, will not always satisfy all the tendencies and views that exist within a dynamic organisation like AZAPO.And that is why when we craft our statements we consider a lot of factors, including the possible reaction they might elicit (both internally and externally). And therefore, despite your views on our stance or those of others, we nevertheless welcome the feedback.

Furthermore, these are some of the factors we consider when make public pronoucements:

  • The need to avoid overburdening our statements with boisterous ideological twaddle that has no practical value or bases in reality.

  • Whether we must issue statements that speak to ourselves or external audiences?

  • And most critically, whether the augments contained in our public pronouncements are sustainable in case of a public discourse with the media, the public or our constituency outside AZAPO.

Thirdly, having studied your email, we respectfully propose to respond only to its principal aspects and those parts we find comprehensible.Firstly, like we said in the beginning, we agree with your ‘pro worker” premise-so no debate there.Secondly, for someone who purports to be 'pro worker' and a BC adherent we hope, we find your objection to volunteering your services to black learners and patients quite  queer to say the least. The majority of these learners and patients who are suffering because of the strike are not just black, but are also from working class backgrounds and this is mainly because their working class parents can't afford to take them suburban schools or private hospitals.

So, all AZAYO is saying is that, while their parents must wage a struggle for better pay, which even though it arises out of the contradictions of capitalism-is not necessarily a struggle for socialism, in waging this struggle, they must however not make their own parents and elderly suffer and/or die in hospital or jeorpodise the education of their own children. This is the essence of the AZAYO message. We regrettably can't offer any sensible reply to the last part of your email because not only are we are unable to comprehend its text, but we also don't see how it relates to the contents of the AZAYO statements.

Lastly, we also believe that, there might be a need to have a more penetrating internal discussion on Trade Unionism and Socialism, Left and Right Opportunism, Deviations to the Right and Left. (The works of Lenin, Stalin and Kuatsky may be useful reading in this regard) or we can perhaps use the forthcoming youth leadership summer school for this purpose.

Thanks again for your feedback.

On behalf of the AZAYO NEC

Veli Mbele

President of AZAYO

Comrades I am sure that we all move from the premise of being pro workers and in that light agree with AZAYO but I strongly object to any suggestion of volunteering. It is being counter revolutionary to suggest that, ours is to expose the true murderous of our people in the form of Zuma and hid constables.

I share comrade Ntontela’s sentiments that the response by President of AZAYO was uncalled for. I saw nothing wrong with comrade Dick’s response to AZAYO press statement. In my view press statements by their very nature must be controversial; they must get toungs wagging and emails flying. And if this was the intention, then objective was achieved. I saw nothing untoward with the response of comrade chair of Mcoseli.
