For a long time I have looked for a free listserver service that would set up a
gateway between the az.sf newsgroup and an open listserver that anyone could
subscribe to. So far no luck. Free listserver services are fairly common but
in general they forbid newsgroup gateways for fear of spreading spam, they
don't know how, or they are just not set up for it. So far the traffic in this
group is fairly light.
The advantages are: the listserver makes it easy to see and reply with E-mail
since most people check their E-mail first anyway. Also some people don't have
access to the az.sf newsgroup. There are also options to view the listserver
posts via the web. On the other side the newsgroup keeps open (to the public)
posts with no possible censorship; can be viewed without giving your E-mail
address to anyone; posts can be viewed for several days even if you just showed
up, and they are the recognized (one & only) group with the name/topic. If you
are looking for an open forum on the internet for something in Arizona, then an
"az.*" newsgroup is the place. Thus, for Arizona based SciFi, az.sf is the
place.
If I were to set up an open, unmoderated listserver that anyone could subscribe
to, and reposted everything from that listserver here, then reposted any posts
(other than my listserver reposts, of course) would anyone be interested? I
would, of course not repost spam. Ads are ok as long as they are vaguely
related to SciFi / Fantasy. If the posts get too heavy, I would give up or
post digests. The subscriber list would be kept confidential. Posts from the
listserver/newsgroup would be identifyable in the Subject line. If possible I
would mke the post appear to come from the original poster. If I couldn't,
then it would appear to come from me. The cross over would be delayed till I
could see and manually transfer the post. I believe I can do this and I am
willing.
Opinions?
