DO NOT use CompuWorld Plus at Fiesta Mall. They totally hosed my system,
then
refused to service it after I had to return it four times. I was in the
process of taking them to small claims court, but fixed it myself after
getting some help, so it was hardly worth taking off time from work. Hell,
they'd already caused me several days work to restore the system.

What it was, they installed a bad IDE controller (VIA) that they knew
nothing
about, and which had bad drivers. In doing so, they managed to trash most of
the data on my hard drive, they made it worse in trying to restore it under
DOS compatibility mode. It became a vicious cycle; they'd work on it an make
it worse.

These folks are totally incompetent and their service stinks; the worst of
both worlds. AVOID THEM at all costs.

Whenever I need computer stuff I just go to Fry's electronics. That place
rocks. The service sucks, but they've got enough merchandise to make up for it.

I made the mistake of buying a big batch of stuff from them once.

80% of it was defective. Ended up making four trips to return stuff.
Fortunately, most of it failed within the first week.

I learned very quickly that certain items from Fry's are crap.
For example, the special deals that include bare, boxed CPU and
motherboard; the motherboards are, usually, borderline no good. They
use their customers to weed out the bad ones. If the mobo has been
returned 3 times, it gets sh*tcanned. I believe that some lots of
mobos they get are *known* to be marginal; they simply sell them cheap
to get rid of them.
When I need a mobo fast, I check the stock; if *any* of them are
opened and returned to stock, I avoid that model. So far, this has
worked for me.

Good tip, and yeah, one of the things that failed was a mb. But
there was a lot of other stuff too. For example, a floppy cable was
wired backward (and it was keyed, so no, I wasn't just putting it
in backward) a video card failed, etc.

I once got a IDE cable that had *one* connector connected backwards. I
had an interesting few minutes on that one!
I never buy OEM cards from Fry's, either (I don't know if the one that
failed for you was OEM or not).

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions about purchasing motherboards at Frye's
Electronics. I'll take them under advisement if I ever purchase such
hardware from them.

I have purchased such items as ethernet cards, cat-5 cable, sound cards,
keyboards and other items from Frye's. I have been quite satisfied every
time. I am a blind computer access technology specialist, and I have
always found the customer service and sales staff at Frye's to take all
the time needed to help me with all purchases.

Regards.

Let me tell ya a little story about your favorite store...

About a year and a half ago, while managing a neighborhood computer
store, I had a lady call that was having problems getting a
motherboard she'd purchased at Fry's to work.

I told her to bring it in and I'd see what I could do.

She did, and as is my practice, I placed my initials in tiny letters,
with a Sharpie, on the corner of the board before testing.

The board was BAD! One cooked chip. Three dead shorts. Several
burnt traces. Etc...

She returned the board for exchange.

A week later, a man called having trouble with a board he'd purchased
at Fry's two days before. I told him to come by and I'd check it out.

I took one look at the board and told him to take it back. It was the
same board! My initials, circled defects, etc...

Less than a week later, another man called about the same problem. He
brought it in and again, it was the same board.

They sold the same defective board to three different people, that I
know of.

And, this is just one of the stories I know about them.

They are a good resource for software, media, etc. But I'd be
extremely careful about buying hardware from them.

About two years ago, I needed to repace a system. I knew nothing about
Fry's except that they had recently opened a store here in Phoenix. I got a
very good price on a suitable system.

The CD ROM drive worked for about two days. So I pulled it and took it in
for replacement. No go. I was informed that if I had opened the case I had
invalidated my warranty. (Nothing about that in any printed material with
the system, btw.) Also, the "Customer Service" manager was extremely
insulting and even implied that I was trying to defraud them and that they
might have to call security to have my girlfriend and me removed from the
premises. A couple of beefy guys did follow us out of the store, but not
before the MANY people in line at Cust. Serv. heard all about our
displeasure.

After that, I did a little surfing and found a website dedicated to
reporting the sleazy business practices of Fry's in several locations. I
don't know if it's still up, but I do remember reading several accounts of
returned merchandise being repackaged and put back on the shelf.

As for me, I'll never again buy anything from Fry's. I mean, who knows
where that mouse pad has been?!?! ;)

Fry's prices only look cheaper until you add the cost of returning
to the store, waiting in line etc.

I bought an ATX power supply for a new machine I was building.
I took it back when it didn't work. I got 3 successive replacements
and none of them worked.

When the P3 first came out, I bought a CPU &M/board on offer there.
I spent 3 weeks trying to get it to work. I took it to DD & they diagnosed
it as a bad board. They installed a new one at my request, and charged
me several hundred bucks. When I took the board back to Fry's they refused
to give me a refund because I wasn't returning the CPU as well, and they
were
sold together on offer (about a $30 discount).

I spent 30 minutes getting louder & louder in their main entrance, swearing
&
cursing & wandering across the inside of the main entrance. Finally the
supervisor came over & gave me a refund!

I bought a Leatherman Wave multitool there - the back of the packaging had
been
cut away and a cheaper one put in the package. I took it back and, after 45
minutes
was allowed into the store to get a replacement. Out of 8 on the shelf 6 had
the same
cheaper version inside!

hmmm,
I have had big problems with memory from them.
Otheriwse, the motherboard I got from them
(an FIC-VA503+) works exceptionally well.

Whatever you do, don't buy ram from frys. its never
as advertised.

I use Camelback Computers and have had little to no problems, I've never
shopped at Fry's although I did walk through a couple of times.

I have gotten computer service and hardware from Little John, and
have always been more than satisfied with the quality of both as well
as the price. And I have yet to have ANY of the parts go bad that I
got from him, even though I started out four years ago with a cheap POS
computer I got out of the Republic.

And he knows more about computers than anyone else I know -- and I
work with some pretty good geeks. But Little John is a "Master
Computer Geek."

they had no problems taking the item back. They also have the BEST prices in
the valley.

Just hover over the line, click and drag. They're not locked. The
info in the frames is dynamic and subject to change. I didn't want to
lock them in and have people have a hard time reading something.

Constructive criticism is always welcome.
