15 years ago I enjoyed taking my kids to Old Tucson and last December I took
all of my nieces and nephews from Back East for a visit. It was a fun time in
a fun place. .... But lost history? Come on!
It was a movie set for gawd sakes. Let's get a grip here.
Just because recorded Arizona History only goes back a few years is no reason
to manufacture it. Nostalgia and History are two different things.
BTW, I just heard on the radio that the fire is being treated as arson.
sigh!

Yikes!! As a 44 yr Tucson native, now living in Knoxville, TN, this is the
first that I have heard of "the fire" at OT.....
Any recap on how bad it was? anyone hurt ? (praying not)..... sounds like
quite a bad scene, as a LOT of Old Tucson can't be "rebuilt" to the old
standards anymore....

Miraculously, there were no major injuries in the fire. The fire started
at about 6:30 pm (While the park was still open.) By 10 pm 60 percent of
Old Tucson was entirely gone including, the costume warehouse, the sound
stage and the Mexican village. Arson is suspected.
Having shot a number of films and TV shows at that location, I'm afraid I
can't view the fire as just another chapter in its history. This is akin
to suggesting that if one's house burns down, its just another chapter in
your personal history. Old Tucson had the only sound stage in southern
Arizona. That loss alone will discourage a number of productions from
coming to Arizona. As Mescal (Old Tucson's other western town location) is
cheifly occuppied by the new TV series "Legends," period locations are
suddenly at a premium in AZ.

Isn't there the other sound stage at the studios near 99th Ave. and
McDowell in Phoenix? I could have sworn that's what those "hangar" style
buildings near the "old Western town" were... I think it's "JCS Studios"
or some such.

The origianl poster was careful to say "southern Arizona", a Politically
correct term often used to put down Phoenix.
I believe the original post concerned concerned the lamentation over the
loss of Old Tucson. I did not use the term Southern Arizona as a put down
of Phoenix so lets not start a flame war. I often spend half the year
working in Phoenix. Aside from movies, there is considerably more work for
actor's up there in the commercial and theatre venues. The fact is, Old
Tucson was a draw to the film industry because of the combination of its
western sets and sound stage. Also many films that did not use Old Tucson
as a setting but shot in many locations would use the sound stage at Old
Tucson for some of their interior scenes. Yes there is a sound stage in
Phoenix. But if you are simulating a Wyoming setting and shooting in the
Sierra Vista or Wilcox area, you are unlikely to go to Phoenix to use the
sound stage there. A lot of filming is done in Phoenix and I hope it
increases to pick up some of the slack that the loss of Old Tucson will
incure. Still, I believe the film industry in this State will suffer as a
result.

I do not believe that using the term "Southern Arizona" is meant as much a
put-down of Phoenix as it is to draw attention to this growing, vital part of
today's Arizona. There was a movement some time back to 'Free Baja Arizona" -
which, obviously was an attempt to separate those of us in Southern Arizona
from the gods in the great state of Maricopa <G>, however, there are some of
us pragmatic enough to know that Arizona (in todo) is a great place to live -
and, yes, it is great to crow about the superb things in Southern Arizona once
in a while. I am given to take that just a step further and refer to
Southeastern Arizona and historic Cochise County. I live in Sierra Vista
(Where Visits Las a Lifetime!), and have since 1984. I am very active on a
number of fronts throughout the state, but I always remember from where I hail
(today), Sierra Vista - 'How The West Is Fun!!".

No they don't, they occaisionally use it in the same sense, though.
