Religious Right vs the First Amendment

The Religious Right pushes their beliefs on the rest of society, and they cynically call it fighting for their own religious freedom. Even the label "right to life" is a misnomer. They have no claim to be respectful of human life in general. Even on the narrower issue of abortion, they oppose policies that reduce abortion far more effectively than making it illegal. Their true goal seems to be punishing women who have illicit sex, and it doesn't matter that the punishment is cruel for the woman forced to have an unwanted child. Nor does it matter that unwanted children are a burden on society.

Politicians know this. Yet they pander to this small single-issue minority.
