Honggang,

You’re signed up for our basic referee companion course.  This will introduce you to the world of refereeing soccer games, and get you out on the field reffing!  Thank you for volunteering to perform this vital service for our players.

This email helps you understand what’s coming up, and provides instructions for preparing.  The course will finish with a field session in two weeks, but you can start now.

It starts with an on-line programmed training session.  Please log onto

                https://www.aysotraining.org/Default.asp

Log on with your AYSO ID number and last name.  If you don’t know your AYSO ID number please let me know.  Then click “start now” under referee training.  The course is called “basic referee”.

This program walks you through various sections of FIFA and AYSO laws and rules, and discusses good procedures for referees.  It tests to confirm your learning throughout.  You can take the online course anytime, and break it into several sessions if you prefer.  It generally takes a couple of hours to complete.

While you are taking the online course, please note any questions that you have.  We will review and answer these during the field training.

There are more training materials on the Area 2J website:

                http://www.ayso2j.org/referee .

This site includes copies of the Laws of the Game, AYSO rules, and referee instructions in both video and text formats.  These materials are optional, but useful.

Before you can referee as an adult volunteer, you need to take Safe Haven.  Safe Haven is AYSO’s program to ensure that our playing fields are safe for players and volunteers, both youth and adult.  The on-line safe haven course can also be accessed at

                https://www.aysotraining.org/Default.asp

Click “start now” under “safe haven”, and select “course MT02 – AYSO’s Safe Haven”.If you have been a coach previously, you almost certainly have already completed Safe Haven, and don’t need to do it again.

You have two weeks to complete the training above.  Then we have our field training session.  This is on

                Sunday, September 13, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM

Miller Middle School soccer fields (use parking lot off of Rainbow)

The purpose of the field training is to reinforce the on-line training, demonstrate the real-life aspects that can’t be taught on-line, and answer your questions.  There will be sessions on pre- and post-game activities, restarting the game, fouls, offside, and positioning/signaling.  These sessions will not repeat all of the material that was in the online course – there isn’t enough time for that.  What is covered will be determined to a large extent by the students, their questions and interest.

At the end of the field training there will be a basic referee test.  This will take about 40 minutes.

We will provide lunch during the field training.  Please bring comfortable clothing.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or issues getting the online program to work.  Thanks.

Turn YOUR child's games from scrimmages to GAMES. Be that volunteer-Team Referee. Wear your uniform or yellow t shirt on saturday to opening day: saturday and be Announced during the parade. Walk with your team. See info below

Before you can referee in AYSO, we need to train you.  This email is intended to help you choose one of two training opportunities coming up.  The first one is tomorrow, so please respond quickly.

1.       Basic Referee Course, held on Thursday, 27 August (6:00 to 9:30 PM) and Sunday, 30 August (9:00 AM to 1:30 PM).  This combines classroom training with some field work.  There are no prerequisites other than an interest in enriching the lives of children through soccer.
2.       Basic Referee Online Companion Course, held on Sunday, 13 September from 9:00AM to 1:30 PM.  This training requires that you cover the material using an on-line course before the classroom session.  This on-line training can be taken to your own schedule.  The face-to-face training on 9/13 covers the field work and other matters which are difficult to teach on-line, and answers any questions you might have.

Either of these options will certify you as a Regional referee, able to referee in U8 and U10 matches.  They both end in a test which confirms your understanding of the laws of the game.  Option 1 probably takes more of your time, but contains more practical information that will help you start refereeing.

Please let me know which of these options you¿¿¿d like to take.  And please sign up as a volunteer at
                https://www.eayso.org/
if you haven¿¿¿t already.  Please let me know if you have any issues with signup or have any questions whatsoever.

Thank you for volunteering to referee in AYSO.  I look forward to seeing you in the classroom soon, and then on the field.
