Hamilfield House in Beith, North Ayrshire

Hamilfield House is a fine old house that stands behind Beith Trinity
Church in the village of Beith. I would like to know who built it and
when, and as much of its history as is known. Can anyone help with
information?

Hi Linda,

Unfortunately I do not know anything about Hamilfield House, and
searching my own resources has drawn a blank. but I wonder if you can
help me nontheless?

I am looking for information on Crummock Park House in Beith. I have
managed to find that it existed in 1856 and that it was probably
called Braehead at one time. I cannot find a build date, who built it
or what it was used for. It is quite an interesting building as it
has an additional U-shaped building, part or all of which may have
been stables at one time (now Park Court) sitting behind it. It also
seems that it was assosciated with the main field in the middle of
town, and possibly sat next to a walled garden, of which only a wall
remains.

Sorry, I just remembered this. Have you been to The Vennel Local and
Family History Centre in Irvine? I was there on my own researches and
they have a very useful book called 'The Castles and Mansions of
Ayrshire'. It has descriptions, pictures and build dates for many,
many of the notable houses in Ayrshire. Sadly, the entry for Crummock
Park appears to be missing entirely, but Hamilfield House may well be
there.

I know the house - living only around 200 yards away. Equally
interesting is the owner, an octogenarian former WWII-era German
scientist (Dr Klinge), and later 'inventor' of Lo salt. I'll check out
the arch. and historical details of the property in the next day or
so.

Hi Linda,

Lo Salt is basically low-salt salt. It's supposed to be a 'healthy'
salt. I've seen it around, but not used it.

Hi Linda

Lo Salt - a google search will reveal all, even Dr Klinge's name. He
lives in the house with his wife of similar age. Actually married in
early 40s Germany, at which time he was being roped into I think jet
development or something by NS regime, his Lo Salt has had a more
beneficial effect on the history of mankind since.

There is a old postcard of the house in Beith Lib. in their history
'drawer' (old photo alblum of Beith) - however from a distance as
still through the gates now electronic. controlled. Have you looked in
Mike Davis' book from around 20 years ago on Castles and Mansions of
Ayrshire?

Recourse to Dr Klinge himself is possible - he goes to the 'Trinity
Church' (sited effectively just outside his 'garden') - which was
originally/formerly Hamilfield Free Chuch and I assume on precedent
elsewhere the feu was given the FC by the sympathetic houseowner in
the 1840s. He may answer letters - is a highly clever and moreover
amusing man.

For the fellow enthusiast who asked re Crummock House (same as
Crummock Park?): You'll have seen its gate piers; if you haven't seen
MD's book, I'd try that too. The only data I can find is from Canmore:

"Crummock House was built in the 18th century by the Kerr family; much
was added by John Kerr, who sold it in 1815. It was demolished in
1968. Two medieval sculptured stones built into the kitchen have been
donated to Saltcoats Museum.
A Hallifax-Crawford 1961; 1969
Sundial, originally at Giffen Castle, then at Crummock, now at
Craigbet, Renfrewshire".

Hi BH,

Sorry, Crummock House and Crummock Park House are completely different
houses. Crummock Park House is on Head Street in Beith and is still in good
enough condition that I live in it.

I have looked through the Castles and Mansions book and found 'Breahead,
Beith, see Crummock Parh, Beith' but there is no 'Crummock Park, Beith' in
the book.

Hamilfield is not in the Castles and Mansions book. I will try
writing once more to Dr Klinge. He didn't answer my first note but
maybe he will be filled with holiday spirit and answer a second one.
But he might not know much about the house. . . .

search property tax records and records of deeds for information about
who built these houses and bought and sold them. Where are such
records kept, and does the public have access to them? In the USA,
they are kept at the county courthouse. I don't know where they are
kept in the UK.

I've been searching around my Brown ancestors in the last few days and think I can shed some light. Crummock Park, previously Brae-head House, was built by Hugh Brown of Broadstone, (who I think is my great great great great grandfather!) in 1798 or just after. If you google "Broadstone Ayrshire" go to Wikipedia and scroll down to the Browns you'll find a reference. I wonder if he still hangs in Beith library!
