Dear All
I am looking for information, or names of any from Ayrshire,
Especially from Kirkmichael
And by the name of F Shaw Kennedy who served in India and Ceylon in the early part of the 20th century.
I am rather unsure of dates

Any information even a scrap would be of great interest as l am trying to piece the history of rubber plantation s and there seems to be a strong link to the person l am searching for.
Thank you
Much appreciated
Manouri

This seems to be the family though there's no mention of Ceylon.

Hi Kay

I am much obliged for this prompt response.
I had traced F Shaw Kennedy as far as being the son of John SK.

I own a lovely colonial house in Sri Lanka named Dyrock.
I have traced the name to Kirkmichael.
I also know that FSK was in Ceylon
In 1881 he placed an advert asking for rubber seeds in the Anglo Brazilian Times.
He then wrote to Curator of Kew Gardens about his good progress with rubber.

Sadly I can't find the final link to harness him to this house.
He died in Kensington which was his wife's home...she predeceased him.

I think a nephew a clergyman is mentioned in his Will who lived in the south of England.
Strangely he had named his house Dyroch ( just a small change in spelling). He is no more.
He was FSKs sister's son to my reckoning.

The pastor of the Kirkmichael church helped but then drew a blank as to FSKs address in Ceylon.

Dyrock was the dower house of a large mansion , now demolished
In Ayrshire.

I am writing to you from Sri Lanka.

Kind regards
Manouri

Manouri,

Happy to get your message though I'm afraid I cannot be of any use to you.

I am a direct descendant of his brother Vernon Hew Primrose Shaw-Kenedy (1855-1935). Vernon married my great grandmother, an American from Chicago. I know that my great grandfather spent time in India because he wrote a pamphlet titled 'My Tiger Experiences' which I have a copy  (an account having to hunt down and exterminate trouble in an Indian plantation).

The family of John Shaw-Kennedy Laird of Kirkmichael (the son of the one mentioned in the Wikipedia page) and Elinor Green Wilkinson consisted of six children in this possible order: Henry, James, Mary, Vernon, Fred, and David.

That is all I've got.

Happy hunting yourself.

Noel

In the British Newspaper Archive there are several entries to the Shaw Kennedy family. One in particular covers the court case of Frederick Shaw Kennedy late of the 79th Regiment commencing an action against his father. Frederick was seeking to have his son Sidney Vernon Shaw Kennedy declared his lawful son. Hope this helps

Hi Noel,

Thank you for your prompt response.

My interest surrounds the name of a house l own in Colombo Sri Lanka - a beautiful  old colonial house.  When my ancestor purchased in the 1920s, it came with its name Dyrock (and remains so).
My curiosity to unravel the origins took me to Ayreshire Scotland and to F Shaw Kennedy who placed an advert in the Anglo Brazilan Times in 1881 for rubber seeds and later communicated with the curator of Kew Gardens about its success ( This archived document says his father John would pay for more seeds..neded urgently etc ) .... he wrote from Ceylon. By 1907 he was a Fe,low of the Royal Geography  Society .

The parish records in Kirkmichael confirms him to be your great grand dads bro, and all you say and more!
I have unearthed a lot of family history if you care to have it.

But Noel, l want one final link ... that FSK had an address in Colombo
Or ideally any communication to indicate he named it after the family home....
I don't hold hopes of any written communication between Fred and Vernon being found now.
I only have his plantation estate address. He has been a pioneer in rubber plantation as far as l can see....

I am no historian.  A mere paediatrician.  But my digging have been enjoyable but sans one final link .

Kind regards
Manouri

Try the smart club near the tea estates in the north-they might well have details of the members of long ago.
Good luck,
Iain

Someone from Ayrshire, working in India and Ceylonwould more likely to have worked for James Finlay which ha many tea plantations in those countries. Isuggest you contact James Finlay's head office in Glasgow. Now owned by Awires, they had excellent records when I worked for them.
Good luck,
Iain
