After the ice retreated the melt water from the Moors that now form
Miurshiel Regional park drained off to the East, cutting burns and outflows
in the underlying rock formation.
Much of this water drained and continues to drain into Castle Semple Loch
,Barr Loch and Kilbirnie Loch.
Some outflows are also the headwaters of the River Garnock.
Water was channeled and controlled to drive water mills as it flowed from
the hills down to these lochs.
Some evidence of this remains and can be seen from the old rail line cutting
between Kilbirnie to Lochwinnoch, now a cycle track. Some conduits carrying
the water to the east remain.
The weir probably had connections with this system?
There are other examples of this in North Ayrshire.----- Original
