Hi all,

I am trying to find out the build date, builder and purpose of what is
known as the Calder Glen Weir, or simply Glen Weir situated at the
edge of Lochwinnoch. Here is a picture (not mine)

I know it's technically Renfrewshire but thought someone here might be
able to help.

Thanks,

Craig

After the ice retreated the melt water from the Moors that now form
Miurshiel Regional park drained off to the East, cutting burns and outflows
in the underlying rock formation.
Much of this water drained and continues to drain into Castle Semple Loch
,Barr Loch and Kilbirnie Loch.
Some outflows are also the headwaters of the River Garnock.
Water was channeled and controlled to drive water mills as it flowed from
the hills down to these lochs.
Some evidence of this remains and can be seen from the old rail line cutting
between Kilbirnie to Lochwinnoch, now a cycle track. Some conduits carrying
the water to the east remain.
The weir probably had connections with this system?
There are other examples of this in North Ayrshire.----- Original

The weir was built to power the Calder Park Mill or "Old Mill" which
was a cotton mill and was built in 1788 for Mr Robert Burns of Burns &
Co, Houston it was demolished sometime in the 19th century and stood
where 63 Calder Street, Lochwinnoch is now situated. The mill later
owned by Mr William Wright of Calderpark, Lochwinnoch.
The Calder park Mill was bigger than The "New Mill" at Calderhaugh
which was built in 1789 which can be seen in Main Street, Lochwinnoch.
It was operating as a silk mill up until about 40 years ago it has
been converted into residential flats.
A sketch of the old building can be seen in the local library and a
map showing the mill's location in 1863 can be viewed in the
Lochwinnoch village web site.

Hope this of some assistance to you.
Bill
