I was  in a Childrens Home in Kilwinning for some time during 1949 to 1951 and I wonder where the records of the home would be kept?. I think it may be Burnside Home but I cannot find any information on Google. Is there anyone out there who would know?. Thank you,

Hi. Burnside home was on the corner of Kilwinning Road & James Crescent, Irvine. Opposite Williamfiled. Perhaps you're thinking of Hazeldene in Kilwinning on the back road to Dalry (Blair Road) and opposite the Eastern boundary wall of Kilwinning Cemetery ??

However, I'm unsure of the historical timeline of Hazeldene.

Hope this helps.  Francisco Haro.

Thanks. I come from Kilwinning originally. I was born in 1950 and remember my Mother telling me when I was wee, if I misbehaved I'd be going to Hazeldene !!

I can't find anything on the internet about Hazeldene's history or any of my local history books.

I'd be interested if you or anyone else find anything....although I did find something about David Lambie MP asking the Secretary of State for Scotland in Parliament about it's closure as a children's home. .... 1979 I think ...

Thank you John,I think it is definitely Burnside. I have only one person I know who is still alive who told me the home was in the main street of Kilwinning going out of town towards Irvine.
I live in Queensland,Australia and find it is hard to find records from here.
I appreciate your answer.
Thank you, Linda Buckingham(nee Dickie)

I have lived here at Old Monk Castle since 1960.
Hazeldene,on the back road from Kilwinning was an Ayrshire Council property ,housed children who were expelled from school.
Still functions in the same manner but run by a company,Spark of Genius Ltd which educates and cares for dissident children.
Will seek out any further information.

Thanks again Fransico for your note. We were easily brought into line back in the 50's! I was threatened with a job at The Munitions in I.C.I. if I didn't do my homework. How cruel, now that I look back, as my father worked there and I remember a couple of large explosions there in the 50's and poor souls would have lost their lives. An absolute tragedy and I hope their families have had good lives without more pain.
Kind regards, Linda

Hi, Burnside Home was on the Kilwinning Road in Irvine and was a childrens home until 1990's (may be a little longer than that, but not sure).  It has been taken over by someone else and now is a private children's nursery.
Buckedden was a maternity home on the Irvine Road in Kilwinning (I was born there) and has been taken over as a private nursing home with lots of new buildings added.  It is nice as homes go. My mother in law was there until her death in January 2012.
I am not sure who would have the records for Burnside, but check with the local heritage centre in Saltcoats, they may be able to help. http://www.ers.north-ayrshire.gov.uk/heritage/independentmuseums_nahc.cfm  it may help.

Thank you so much for letting me know. I was adopted at age 3 and brought up by Grace & George Dickie of Glencairn Street, Stevenston. I found a brother I never knew I had about 5 years ago and have been welcomed into my birth family. They live near Glasgow but my birth mother came from a farm near Mauchline.
I was born in Dumfries and have no knowledge of the years between leaving Dumfries and being adopted by the Dickie's.  Unfortunately all the people around at that time are now deceased.
It is good to know that you have happy memories of Burnside and I am so happy to hear that.
Kindest regards,
Linda
