Hello everyone

My grandmother was a Jenkins (Elizabeth McKinnon Callan Jenkins)who married James Graham in Glengarnock in 1911.

They married at The Stables, Glengarnock. My Grandfather lived at Store Place, Glengarnock before he was married and  my G Grandfather  - also James Graham - lived at Lochend  Farm, Glengarnock.

I have some photos taken around 1914 of a house which I thought could be from around Glengarnock.  I have visited Glengarnock twice and haven't been able to locate Store Place, The Stables or the white house in the photo.

I know Lochend Farm has been pulled down and I am assuming Store Place has as well.

Would love some information of the history of Store Place, The Stables and Lochend Farm and I have attached a photo of the white house.

There is also another photo of a house which I think could be in Glengarnock.

Kind regards
Gladys

Hi Gladys - you need a really large scale map, which should show the buildings, and hopefully, name them. Or try a local directory for the 1911 period, to see if there are addresses  linked to these buildings. Then you will know where to look when you visit.  A Directory will also tell you a little of the history of Glengarnock,  and should mention sties in the area. if you can't find anything for the time period you want, move further back in time.  A Gazeteer will also give you a capsule view of a parish with its village. Remember to look outside the main parish you are looking for - look at all the adjoining ones for the sites you want, like the farm, and also along the roads that existed at the time of the events. Old pictures of the area, from postcards, ads, newspapers or books might also help. Terri in Canada

Hi Gladys

I am attaching a photo of Store Place, which as you thought is no longer there. The middle photo in your message shows a pair of cottages which still exist. I live around three miles from Glengarnock and will get a photo of them next time I am there.
My 90 year old mother was born yards from Store Place and I will ask her if she recalls Grahams from the area. Do you know when they left Glengarnock?

Regards

Robert

Hi Robert
I have been corresponding with Gladys in regard to her Glengarnock inquiries
I did send her a copy of the same photo which was posted on Gerald Boyles site
These buildings were part of the Glengarnock steelworks housing area known as " the Raws"
My Grandmother lived there with her family prior to moving to the Longbar
I grew up in Glengarnock and spent a lot of time at my Grandmothers at the railway cottages
She lived in the Railway Cottages , to be a little more precise in the Dummy Lane cottages
Perhaps you can ask your mother knew the Ryan's sometimes also known as the Cahills
I also recognized the photo that she posted of the pair of cottages
Much appreciated

Regards, Jim

Thanks Robert

My Grandparents came to Australia in 1926. He was working as a chauffeur for Lord Sorn from Sorn Castle.

My G Grandfather James Graham and my Aunty Jeannie died in the early thirties and are buried at Patna in Dalmellington where they came from before moving to Glengarnock. After my G Grandfather died my Aunty Jeannie did move from Lochend Farm into Glengarnock. I will have to find the address I have it somewhere.

Your mother may remember my Uncle Anthony Graham. He lived at 55 Main Road, Glengarnock until he died in the early seventies.

Thank you for your help

Kind regards
Gladys

Hi Jim

My mother was born at "the Raws", in fact 92 The Square, and her family moved to Longbar about 1937 when the houses were just built. Her father was Jimmy Jess.
I have spoken to her and she thinks she remembers the Ryans, but thought they moved to Kilbirnie and her recollections of the family were Lizzy, and another daughter she thought may have been Martha and a son Tommy. Her comment was that their mother was an cheery wee woman, a wee bit stout. Does this make any sense? She also knew Donnelly's, from the Square, but as you don't mention them, I will assume your line didn't hail from the Raws.

I was looking at John McFarland's "Memoirs of the Raws" and see a Jim Ryan at Dummy Lane, is this your Grandfather?

Regards

Robert

Hi Gladys

I run a site called Beith People it has just over 2500 members, I have a lot of people on it from Glengarnock, Longbar and Beith and surounding areas perhaps they could help with your enquiry, the site is mainly mature people, great photos, I have a few pictures of the Raws and the Steelworks.  Hope you don't think I am being cheeky or plugging the site but you may get some information.............Ann

Hi Robert
I apologize if I have hijacked this thread in regards to Gladys questions
Tell your mother that Lizzie she refers to was my mother, the other daughter was named Emma, and Tommy was my uncle. There were 4 boys, Tommy, jack, James and Bert and 2 girls Emma and Lizzie
Martha was my grandmothers name and for some unknown reason the family was known by two surnames- Ryan or Cahill
As stated my grandmother lived in the railway cottages and I remember them well , she also moved over to the Longbar
Your mother describes my grandmother to a tee
I do know the Donnellys but they were not relations
I do know the names of a lot of the people that lived in the Raws as well as the Longbar ( the jungle ) referred to in John McFarlands memoirs
I seem to recall the name Jess as well although not quite sure
My family emigrated to Canada in the early 50s but I returned back for summer holidays for many years
I would assume that Jim Ryan at the Dummy lane would have been my grandfather although he passed away prior to me being born. My grandmother lived at the Dummy Lane cottages - the one right at the end closest to the rail embankment- she also had a chicken pen there
I would have been named after my grandfather as was the custom in those days
I was also given Cahill as my middle name
All the best to your mother

Thanks again Robert

Hi there Ann,

I am doing some searching for my partner Margaret Maguire who stayed briefly with the Kempsel   family in the 1940’s. In particular, she would like to contact Davida Kempsell who will now be over eighty if still alive

Can you please help?

Hi Jim and Gladys

Gladys, like Jim I am sorry if we have strayed from your original posting.
My mother can't recall your uncle I'm afraid Gladys, but she often after a lot of thinking comes up with the goods, so I will keep you posted. I haven't forgotten about the photograph I said I would send, just not been in the area on a dry day, but it will come.
Jim my mother returns your greetings and reiterated to me that the Ryans were a nice family.

So, best wishes to both of you.

Robert

Hello again and Happy New Year to all.

I notice you spoke of two last names being  used. This might mean a second marriage somewhere, or more likely the following.

Although it is a common custom, women are not required to take their husband's name on marriage. In the English speaking world, Scotland was the last hold out for using of maiden or both last names among women. It wasn't until after the increase in government paperwork required in everyday life during WWII and  in the l950's, that Scottish women began to be known increasingly by  their husband's last name.  So though people today might speak of themselves as having a certain last name, it would have been far more flexible in say, the 1960's or earlier.  And different again, here in Canada, heavily influenced by our Scottish background, my father was frequently called by his middle name, by both family and friends, which was his Welsh mother's maiden surname.  Terri in Canada
