Greig Family

I am a 6th generation descendant of Captain William James Greig DOB 23 Nov 1821 Place of Birth: Ayr, Scotland - he sailed to and lived in Fanning Island.  He died 27 July 1892.  William James Greig married Teanau Atu from Penrhyn Island.  William was the youngest of 9 children.

I read in an earlier reply much to my amazement that a Captain William James Greig lst married Margaret Ellen Davidson 26 Dec1848 Eden NSW they had 2 children prior to the marriage to Teeanau.  William and Teeanau 10 children,

they were: Georges Bicknell Greig (this is my line) William Henry, Marion, Henry Christie, Margaret, James, Mary, Elizabeth, David Bruce and Caroline.

 

Initially I was looking for a photo of Captain Williams and Hugh Greig memorial plaque in the Fanning Island Cemetry and stumbled across the above re: Margaret Ellen Davidson. If anyone has a photo of this plaque I would very much appreciate a copy.

 

I am hoping in the next few months to travel to Ayr and locate the cemetry of William Greig's parents whom were David Greig and Agnes Brown her DOB 1792 DOD 17 May 1822.  David and Agnes married 18 Sept 1802.  Agnes is from the parish of Straiton.  It is thought that David is from Glasgow and after her death may have returned there with the children?

 

Any one have any information I would be most grateful..

Well I don't know about the grocery. I only know that my great grandfather David Greig, son of Captain William Greig and Te Anau Atu died on the ship. That's what my grandmother said (his daughter).

hi im a descendant of William Greig reading through all post and im shock to see how well we are all related and yet havent met each other knowing we could be walking past each others.....its unbelievable how well greig family extend to certain countrys and knowing our blood line goes all the back to the viking stone age...me and my older sister have being trying to find some answer to our g.g.g. grandfather William greig (Captain William) i know we had the family reunion in the cook island then it was in Tahiti and last one was in Auckland NZ didnt make it to all but my brothers and 3 of my sister's did....lol and i think i finally came across with a image of william greig OMG!! our g.g.g.grandfather was a handsome man married to teanau from Penrhyn island Sister of the king of Penrhyn....didnt realize he stayed in America for 40 years so at the moment im searching for family staying in USA

Thank you for these photos. I have an original copy but no names on the back. I am assuming this is William Greig ("King of Fanning Island"?) and a brother...but there were also members of the Greig family that married Hawaiian wives. Do you have confirmation as to who these people are and an approximate year? I believe the photo was taken here in Honolulu--I would need to dig through some boxes to confirm that but I'm fairly sure of that.

BTW your timing is perfect. I have finished a few projects and want to get back to my family history project, since it appears I will be "sheltering at home" for the foreseeable future. Getting these photos is inspiration to get going on this again.

I'm am so greatful to be stumbling upon this post and the photos are a bonus.. I have been trying to put together my mother's side of the family for a while now and am astonished at how great this family really is. My mother recalls going to the very first Greig reunion and meeting families from everywhere, she even met with families who are still reciting in Hawaii. Also the last family reunion was meant to be in Hawaii but was postponed and have been at that for quite some.
I've put up the Greig tree on my familysearch page, please help me fix it.

No, I am Susan Walker Kowen. Margaret Greig, sister of William, traveled from Scotland to Australia (apparently with William), and married a Hugh McIntyre in NZ. Eventually they moved to Tahiti, then Maui, then California and then to Honolulu. They had many children including a William who was born in 1855 in Honolulu. He is not buried in any of the family plots here in Honolulu, where most of the others are buried. This would have been a nephew of William Greig of Fanning Island. Another of Hugh and Margaret's children was Jane McIntyre, born on Maui in 1846, who married John S. Walker. These are my great grandparents. They had 11 children, one of whom was named William Greig Walker and was born in Honolulu in 1881 and died in New York in 1926. John and Jane's youngest child, Henry Alexander, was my grandfather. 

If you have any information about William Greig's travels from Scotland to AU/NZ or around the Pacific, I would be interested.

Are you the one who emailed me this photo? (I'm getting a little  confused on sources of materials.) I have a hard copy of the same photo in a family album. Is it your understanding that this is William Greig and Te Anua? I suspect the other man is a brother of William. Do you know who he is?

There is quite a well known Greig family in Ayrshire.David Greig who went through the 2nd world war with the Ayrshire Yeomanry was a stock broker in Glasgow, had 3 daughters, Rosiie,Susan and Georgina.
