Africa’s response to climate change is a development issue, involving water availability, food security, energy availability, resource use conflicts and social cultural and political issues. The impacts of climate change affect our response to other agendas in the continent like the MDGs, country strategic plans and visions. Since the COY2 AYICC conferences in 2006, the African youths have been proactive in addressing the challenges of climate change, mitigation and adaptation. AYICC has exploited online networking activities, country specific initiatives, and international conferences to achieve their mission of influencing the adoption of climate-friendly behavioral changes at the community level. In addition to mitigation and adaptation activities, AYICC has supported initiatives to build capacities of the rural youths and the communities to enable them to adapt to the changing climates.

In Kenya, where the initiative was first born, the youth have over time held varied gatherings and climate change related projects all over the country in the same spirit of influencing behavioral changes at the community level.

Since 2009, the youth under the leadership of a New Coordination Body and new Co directors, involved in numerous Climate Change awareness projects around Kenya, which all culminated in two Major events: The National Youth Conference on Climate Change and the Kenyan Youth delegation to COP 15.

Overall Objective of AYICC

The overall objective, to which AYICC is meant to contribute, is to ensure the active engagement of African youth and their agenda in the climate change work, COP meetings and International Climate Youth Movement

AYICC-Kenya Objectives

1. To build the capacity and enhance the involvement of the Kenya youth in the climate change initiatives through sensitization and field based experiences.

2. To enhance the adoption of climate change best practices throughout the country by engaging young people and the larger society.

3. To seek support and promote the active participation of the Kenyan youth in the UNFCCC processes.
