Quiz: Are You Committing Any of the 5 Deadly Sins of the Job Search

While there is no doubt that the job market is very competitive, some job seekers are making serious mistakes in their search approach. As a job search coach, speaker, author and successful job search coach, Judi Adams of RightChanges has noted several mistakes that all too many job seekers make that sabotage their job search efforts. She has titled these common mistakes “the deadly sins” of the job search.

You can go through these simple checks and see if you are a job search sinner:

1.    If you have thought “I have found a job before in the past I can do it again” but not

researched what you have to do differently in this very dissimilar job market, then you have

        committed sin # 1.

2.    If you started looking for a job but harbor anger toward your former employer, lack confidence

in yourself, or are not positive about your future, then you have committed sin # 2.

3.  You have committed sin # 3 if any of the following are true:

                 a. Updated your resume as the first step of your job search

                 b. Can’t specifically answer the question why the company should hire you

over your competition (and “I need a job” does not count)

                 c. Respond to the question “What are your strengths?” with the answer “I’m a

                     people person, I’m a hard worker, I’m organized, and I’m a quick study…”

4.  You have committed sin #4 if you are missing any of the following minimally required pieces of

      marketing material:

                a.   A business card specific for your job search

                b.   LinkedIn profile

                c.        30-second Elevator Pitch that does not include the words “unemployed” and “I used

to” but does include the words “I am know for” and “who do you know…”

                d.   Networking guide (previously referred to as a marketing plan) and know they are

used to give to people in your network

                e.  Cover letters that visually (not paragraph format) highlight how you are a match for

                     what they are looking for.

5.   If you spend most, or your entire job search efforts looking for and applying to jobs on-line, then

you have committed sin # 5.
