I’ve noticed very slow performance, with delays lasting seconds while moving from one element to the next, and VoiceOver frequently announcing “Chrome Busy”, under Mac OS 10.13.x. The machine is a late 2013 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a 2.6ghz dual-core CPU.
VoiceOver is configured to use DOM tree order navigation mode, and I am using Ctrl-Option-Left/Right-Arrow keys to navigate.
A good example of the phenomenon occurs when attempting to read the text of the blog post at
https://www.morbo.org/2018/05/linux-sandboxing-improvements-in_10.html
describing how Mozilla is attempting to catch up to Chrome with respect to security under Linux.
I’ve noticed this performance issue, but to a lesser extent, in Apple’s Safari browser also. I’ve reported it to Apple Accessibility as well.
It’s clearly a Mac OS issue, as I haven’t noticed it with Chrome under Chrome OS or Microsoft Windows.

A colleague at work with a relatively recent MacBook was unable to reproduce the performance problem last week. If there’s a good tool for collecting relevant performance data, I’m willing to run it for debugging purposes.

2. Same as 1 above but leave a tab open with Gmail, switch to another App and come back - Chrome will be busy for 30 seconds.
3. Compose new email in new tab (Shortcut "D") - navigating with Tab between TO line, CC, Body and actions on bottom will result in "Busy"/
4. Try to navigate with arrows between a few names in the TO line of a new message being composed - Chrome will get busy really quickly.
5. Hover your mouse on a message with a lot of links or replies (With "mouse cursor - moves voiceover cursor" set).
