Hi everyone,

Chrome version 92 comes with a number of accessibility fixes and improvements across platforms. Here are some of the notable updates in this milestone, with links to relevant bugs and code changes when available for reference.

Highlights

  • Added Point Scanning which allows switch access users to click anywhere on the screen by first selecting a horizontal range and then selecting a vertical range. This enables users to use Switch Access on screens with no focusable items (e.g. maps, games) or use switch access more efficiently on screens with too many focusable items. (Change 2686813, Change 2580139, Change 2450924)

All Platforms

  • As required by ARIA and CORE-AAM, an unnamed role="region" is no longer mapped as a landmark. (Change 2831133, Bug 840819)

  • Improved accessibility when navigating to flags anchor links in chrome://flags. Specifically, screen readers will start announcing the flag name on such direct navigations. Currently, no message is announced by screen readers. Also, keyboard only users will be able to navigate the page starting from the flag on such direct navigations. Currently pressing "tab" brings the focus back to the top of the page. (Change 2831264, Bug 991423)

  • DevTools

Chrome OS

Linux

  • Assistive technologies on Linux will be notified when an ARIA menu is opened or closed and can use this information to update state and/or present the change. (Change 2642354, Bug 1171433, Bug 1171433)

Mac

  • Assistive technologies on macOS will be notified when an ARIA menu is opened or closed and can use this information to update state and/or present the change. (Change 2642354, Bug 1171433, Bug 1171433)

Thanks so much for these updates. On Linux, Chrome seems much more responsive than it was a month or two ago. Great work!
