I'm a developer, testing for accessibility.
I use ChromeVox occasionally, and I am familiar with screen readers.
I haven't used ChromeVox in a few weeks; it was working fine then.
Today, I tried enabling it, and it seems to be almost completely broken.
It will only read the address&search bar, and the "show all downloads" button - essentially, just the window chrome of Chrome.
It will not read the content of any web page I tried (including google.com).
I am using Chrome Version 45.0.2454.93 m on Windows, with ChromeVox extension 45.0.2428.0.
Is there a problem with these versions, or is there something going on that I am completely missing?
Thanks.

Hello Carolyn,

This problem should be fixed with Chrome  46, now currently on the "beta" channel.
If not, its "definitely" fixed on Chrome 47 on the "dev" channel. Though I'm using a Chromebook, dev 47 is the channel Im using at this time.

I'm unsure if when using the beta channel, if the Chromevox
extension gets updated, or if its just the browser itself..

How do I figure out which version I have?

Hi, Trenton.

Just to follow up, ChromeVox is working for me now, but here's what I did to get there:
- I switched to the beta channel, but ChromeVox still did not work (i.e. still did not read any HTML content)
- I switched to the dev channel, but ChromeVox still did not work
- I rebooted my machine (still on dev channel), but ChromeVox still did not work
- Then I removed and re-added the ChromeVox extension, and finally ChromeVox worked!
- I had a feeling that it was probably just the remove/re-add that fixed my problem, so I uninstalled Chrome and went back to the stable channel, and ChromeVox is working fine on Chrome 45.
(it's the same ChromeVox extension version (45.0.2428.0))

So just fyi, if someone in future has a similar problem (i.e. ChromeVox seems really badly broken), the first thing they should try is removing and adding the ChromeVox extension.
Hope this helps,
Carolyn

Hi, Staci.

You can figure out the version of Chrome by going to chrome://chrome/  (i.e. type chrome://chrome/ in the omnibox (aka "Search and address bar"))
You can figure out the version of ChromeVox extension you have installed by going to chrome://extensions/ and looking beside the word ChromeVox.

Both versions can also be determined from the GUI, under the "hamburger" menu in the top right (Help and about->About Google Chrome; and More tools->Extensions).

Hope this helps,
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn, and thanks for your findings!

Glad to know it was a simple fix of uninstalling than reinstalling.

May your adventure in to the Chrome world be an enjoyable one!
:)
