How do people manage Email on a Chromebook accessibly?

Hi all,

I am fairly new to the Chromebook, but wondered how people manage Email efficiently?  I’m talking about non-Gmail Email.

I don’t think Inbox will let us create Non-Gmail accounts, but will Gmail itself?  Although I have a Gmail account, I want to use this non-Gmail Email address on my Chromebook as well.  I don’t want to forward Email and mess about like that, I’d prefer to access my Email using Imap.  Where do I find the settings to create a new Email account in Gmail?

Also, another related question if I may.  How do we efficiently use conversations in the Gmail extension?  As I see it, when I open a conversation, I just get a single web style page with all the messages, separated by header.  But Gmail doesn’t tell us how many items in the conversation before we open it, or does it?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to get the best out of my Chromebook with ChromeVox.

Thanks a lot.

All the best

Steve

Hi,

Update: As I thought, Gmail won’t let us add Imap accounts, they have to be Pop3.  What a missed opportunity.

I think the most efficient way then is going to be to use Aqua-Mail on Android,.

I think I’ve answered my own question, but how do others handle this?  It seems that Email on a Chromebook is very clunky.

All the best

Hello,

I have *all* e-mail addresses forwarded to one e-mail address, and the e-mails set to delete after forwarding from the other address. I then use Inbox.google.com for accessing the one e-mail address. I also made it so that when I compose a message, I can select the e-mail address to send from, and when replying to a message, the reply is sent from the message which it originated. I love Inbox sorting, and for me, this was the best and most efficient way to do things.

Alternatively, you have a few options:

  1. Check e-mails on each site individually, creating tabs for each.
  2. If you have a Chromebook that supports Android apps, set up something like Aquamail.
  3. Check to see if your mail provider has a Chrome extension.

As for your question about Gmail extension, I don’t use it, but thought that it redirected to the main site. When you open a conversation, you can navigate to previous and next heading with P and N.

Thanks.

Hi Nimer,

About how I thought then, what clunky ways to handle Email.

OK, now to find out if Aqua has keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks for help.

Hello,

I don't find forwarding e-mail to be clunky... actually works quite well. It took a bit to set up, but once set up it is like checking all my e-mail from all my inboxes with one account... no different than a synced Inbox in many apps...

Thanks.

Hi Nimer,

It must be different, because when you delete the forwarded Email, it doesn’t get deleted on the originating server.  Still sounds like a mess to me.  You also don’t get your Imap folder structures.  It’s too simplistic.

All the best

Hello,

You can set up most e-mail providers to delete a message from the originating server upon forwarding, which is what I have done. Actually I thought this was an option within Gmail, but maybe not. As for imap structure... it will not copy that over, but you could recreate your folder structure... clunky to set up, but works quite well once set up. I agree that an e-mail client of sorts would be nice, but I haven't used one in many years and believe that my system of e-mail management is quite effective.

Thanks.

Hi Mimer,

To be honest, I also think forwarding Email, so they pass through multiple SMTP servers, is a security risk as well.  I run my own business, so that’s just going to be too messy for me.

I see there is a Chrome extension called CloudMagic that will do this, but it looks clunky, just like Gmail to me.

I have just reached out to Aqua, to see if I can find a list of keyboard shortcuts.

Thanks though, your system is great for a home user, but I don’t think it’s up to the job for a business.

No, certainly not for a business… I would not use that for business either.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for this.  I can read Email with Talkback fine, using the Search+left, right up and down keys.

So it looks like Aqua works for me.

Thanks for all help.

Hi,

What I do here is set the review lines to 5, I think the maximum, then I can read the Email without opening it for the most part.  Longer ones I can’t, but mostly I can.

Hi Nimer,

Well my aim is to see how much I can get done realistically on a Chromebook from a business point of view.

It is not letting me down much so far, other than Email, and Chromevox isn’t as extensive as Talkback yet.  It doesn’t have some of Talkback’s nice options like turning off pitch changes and some other things.

But by and large, I am pleased with it.  Again, even Apple recognise that we have Imap and exchange Email built into their systems, surely Google shouldn’t miss this one out for much longer?
