In the present case of Mahesh Babu, for instance, I was perfectly able to understand that the man has oodles of that mysterious-yet-all-important It factor that marks a charismatic star, while recognizing that half the stuff I was watching (particularly the early movies although the fairly-recent, pseudo-scifi, pedotastic-by-inference, all around weird fantasy Naani co-starring Ameesha Patel was pretty terrible too) was almost irredeemably bad.
Q. Oh dear. That kind of stuff never works out, does it?
A. For reals. They get framed as terrorists by evil villain Pappu Yadav (Irrfan Khan) and his brother-in-law Mondi Naani (Prakash Raj) when they try to field a student as a candidate against him in the upcoming elections.
I can relate to this so well.
I just have to watch every movie I can find by my fave actors and it does lead me into some very dodgy territory indeed. But that is all part of the fun of SI cinema, especially when there are no subtitles so you can make up your own dialogues ?
In time however, the CBI in the form of Prakash Raj catches up with Nandu. Prakash Raj also gets a chance to display his excellent Identi-kit Artist skills after somehow deciding to interview old time gangster Sadhu who is in jail. It could only be a matter of time til they identify Mahesh Babu from that sketch!
While Athadu is an action packed film, there is still the obligatory comedy track which allows Sunil and Brahmi to do their thing. Both play characters that serve a purpose in the narrative, and both perform well. Sunil in particular gets to show some of the range that made Maryada Ramanna so enjoyable. There are other light moments throughout the film that just happen along the way. One local goon sends his gang off to thrash Nandu but insists that as petrol prices are high, they should travel in one car. While we missed the traditional Sumo convoy, we did enjoy this:
I like the songs more than Temple, but I agree that this film excels because of the acting and story. Often the best part of a movie for me is the music and dancing, so its great when a film actually has it all.

And Trisha IS well-suited. I laughed out loud, even in subtitles, when she and Nandu were having their little banter sessions. Your friend is correct, of course, but given the other end of the spectrum is Amrita Rao with her loverstruck-calf face, Trisha is much better. Are there any movies in which Mahesh Babu is not a baby faced killer? And are they any good? Tell me!
