We are a consulting and recruiting firm. Our client, an innovative advertising startup, is seeking a creative Senior Software Engineer with machine learning and distributed computing experience. Your role will be to help the development team in building a sophisticated online advertising metrics application. This is a hands-on position that requires extensive development for release in a production environment. The ideal candidate will have good analytical and troubleshooting skills, fluency in coding and excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

Work with an open/friendly team of engineers and research scientists
Contribute to product vision/direction
Create robust high-transaction production applications
Develop prototypes for research projects
Production application development based on research
Production software and environment troubleshooting
Requirements
BS in Computer Science or a related field, MS preferred
Extensive experience with distributed software development
Data mining and predictive modeling skills
Strong OO knowledge
Expert in Java
Comfortable with distributed development environments and tools
Expert in the Linux/OS X command line
Proven list of shipped products
Solid math background
Excellent communication skills
Desired
Background in natural language processing NLP
Extensive experience with modern ML/NPL tools (WEKA, Vopal Wabbit) & extensive hands on coding experience.
Previous startup experience
Experience with cloud computing platforms
Exposure to popular open source machine learning tools
Data harvesting experience
Experience with search content classification or spam detection
Experience in the advertising industry particularly in optimization
Experience with non-relational NoSQL document oriented data stores

Our client is a startup in the online advertising world, based in New York City. Here is the client's write-up on the role & the environment

"We build large-scale distributed applications on Amazon Web Services - largely utilizing the JVM - that collect and analyze large quantities of data. At times we have around 150 machines up and crunching away.

We aspire to keep our technology fresh so the work stays interesting, and since we're a startup, the organization is very flat, allowing for maximum freedom and autonomy. We think this fosters an environment of trust that increases productivity and morale. Similarly, there is no one on the technical staff that does not code, so you won't be told to stick to a spec an out-of-touch architect designed last year when day-to-day realities clearly trump the design - we are looking for people who can design for themselves, and who can see their creations through from start to finish.
