Hi there,

I am new to AWS, it seems like a really good offering but I am struggling with a few basic features, I have created an instance of a windows server:

1- Is it possible to add users (other than Administrator) to server? I tried adding one through the control panel and but I wasn't able to log on with that user.

2- Does the DNS change every time you stop and restart the instance? Is there a way to fix it?

3- Is it possible to choose to host in Ireland? Each time I went through the creation process, I was given a choice of US based hosting locations.

Thanks,

Duncan

Yes. You need to create an "Elastic" IP address, which you can then
assign to any running instance. Look for "Elastic IPs" in the EC2
control panel.

Select "EU (Ireland)" from the regions drop down menu at the top right
of the control panel. It should then default to this region when
creating instances.

Hi Duncan,

I use AWS a lot, but I haven't used it for windows instances for quite a few years, but I'll try to help out here.

1. I had this set up years ago. If I remember correctly, you need to log in to the instance as the administrator and create the new users on the machine. You allow them access through the firewall (security group) and they can log in remotely to the instance through remote desktop.

2. Yes and yes. If you want the same ip address you need to set up an elastic IP and assign it every time you restart the instance. You are only charged for elastic ip's when they are NOT being used.

3. Yes, when you log in to your ec2 dashboard you need to select your region from the pull down menu at the top right of the screen

Hope this helps, AWS can be a bit intimidating when you are new to it :-)

Regards,

Mark

Thank you both for your replies, much appreciated. I had a further question about DNS. Is it possible to assign a DNS to an instance and does the DNS change everytime you launch the instance?

Thanks,

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

Not sure I completely understand your question, but if you assign an elastic ip address to the instance, you can register that address with a nameserver eg Amazon Route 53
