A WORD FOR TODAY, May 8, 2026
“It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. ‘Yahweh is my portion,’ says my soul. ‘Therefore I will hope in him.’ Yahweh is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahweh. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.” Lamentations 3:22-27
It has been four weeks since I “retired” from daily writing of A WORD FOR TODAY. It has been quite a month. I have to admit that I’ve enjoyed the freedom. I don’t have to turn my computer on first thing in the morning and try to find inspiration. I spent a few days organizing my files. My website completely disappeared from the Internet, but I kept copies of every document. I wanted to save them to an external drive (or two!) just in case something happened to my computer. I did discover a few missing files, and for some reason an entire year of MIDWEEK OASIS was missing. I could recreate those files, so I have managed to save all my writing and have copies stored in a strongbox.
Once that job was completed, I organized the files for a book I began writing a few years ago. I actually have two books started but decided to focus on one that I’m going to call “Faith From My Felines and Other Animals, Lessons from God’s Creatures on How to Live.” I didn’t have the time I wanted to work on it, so it has been mothballed for more than a decade. I think I’ve finished the first chapter, and I have most of the book outlined. It will be filled with stories that I used in A WORD FOR TODAY over the years, so I had to go through the last few years to include the more recent adventures. It has been a bit overwhelming, but I’m happy with the progress and hope to make a publication announcement sometime in the future.
We’ve had another major change in our little corner of the world: we have added two new creatures to our home. It has been four years since we lost our last cat, at which time we decided to take a break. It has been good to be free to travel without having to worry about finding sitters, but a few weeks ago both Bruce and I decided we were ready. Just a few days after we admitted as much to each other, friends announced that they had found the babies of a feral cat that needed homes. We couldn’t resist. So, just as I begin a book about faith from my felines, we have two new kittens to give us more stories.
Solomon wrote in Lamentations that God’s mercy is new every day. We make plans for our lives, we go about our work, often thinking that it is the most important thing in the world. We are reminded, however, that we never know what tomorrow will hold. God is faithful and we can hope in Him no matter how we are using our gifts and glorify Him in the world.
I knew I wasn’t done sharing my faith, and I admit that I missed writing my daily devotional. I am thankful that God is leading me to focus my gifts in a new way. I have been happy to have the time to do things away from the computer, but I will be posting occasionally. I won’t be creating a new website but my domain is parked on a new server so that people can access my final devotions and find the links to my Facebook and email where I will post as often as I can. I am going to try to get into a new habit of posting on a weekly basis, probably Friday morning. After all, we can all use regular reminders to seek God’s grace and hope for His salvation as we wait for the fulfillment of all His promises. I hope you will welcome a new WORD or two from me in the days to come.
