I'm an engineer or anti-oppressive practice in Portland, OR - I have a business called People-Places-Things where I train English speakers to teach English in a culturally responsible way.
I have a colleague moving to LA in 6 months - she's a native Spanish speaker who has been training English teachers in Cancun for several years. I'm looking to work with her in LA to develop cultural competence in Language Teaching.
Most English teachers are white, but there is no reason why any person of color who speaks English shouldn't be teaching English to immigrant and refugee communities. Our work in Portland shows that culturally competent English teaching is more effective as well.
I am looking for excellent organizations working with immigrant/refugee/non native English speaking communities working in LA that I can partner with; also, I'm looking for English speakers who are willing to participate in P-P-T's certificate program and build language/culture bridges in LA
