Happy Holidays AWARE community!
As we head into the holiday season we are reconnecting with family and friends. Why not also reconnect with a movement for racial justice in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities? Join AWARE-LA on Saturday, December 3 from 1-4PM in West Los Angeles for a very special gathering of white anti-racists in Los Angeles for a supportive and engaging discussion on whiteness, anti-racist and racial justice practice, and the holidays. This our first of many rotating regional dialogues throughout Los Angeles, and we'd love to begin them with you! Please contact us with your name and interest, and we'll send you the home address and directions for the December meeting. We look forward to seeing you then! Below is our working agenda for the day. Special thanks to Brian and Michele for joining at the Volunteer Dialogue this month and helping to design the dialogue agenda, and for Shelly for offering to host the dialogue in her home. As usual, those who would like to help facilitate the day's dialogue are welcome to come early at 12:30PM.
We are also looking for volunteers to share (for 2-3 minutes): a piece of antiracist or racial justice art (poetry, music, reading, etc.) OR historical or contemporary example of the white supremacist system OR historical or contemporary example of white antiracist resistance / alliance with people of color. Please contact us with your interest.
WORKING AGENDA
1-1:30PM Small group check-in / New member orientation: What has come up for you around race and whiteness this past month?
1:30-1:40PM Introductions and discussion guidelines
1:40-2:30PM Personal solidarity: Concentrated small group time on sharing, active listening, and strategizing around personal/interpersonal issues with race/racism
2:30-2:40PM Break and butcher paper brainstorms on following questions:
- What's coming up for you around race, racism, and white privilege and the holidays?
- What are some approaches to negotiating race and racism over the holidays?
- How are the holidays bound up with white privilege and racism? Envision an anti-racist holiday season.
2:40-3:40PM Large group discussion on butcher paper brainstorms
3:40-3:45PM Volunteers for next dialogue: hosts, facilitators | Workgroup announcements and requests for volunteers
3:45-4:00PM Check-out: 1 plus, 1 change, 1 insight
