The avr-xboot docs indicate that avrdude 5.10 can't program the boot
section of the AVR flash.

Alex mentioned that a patch is available against 5.10 to fix and build
from source.

At

http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/avrdude/

It seems that they have released 5.11 on Aug 27th, 2011.
Does anyone know if it includes the fix to be able to program boot
code?

If not, does the patch apply correctly against 5.11 or should I still
build 5.10?

Where is the best place to get the patch?

Thanks,
D.E.

Unfortunately, it does not. I believe the patches on the bug report
still work, but I have not tried in a long time as I have a version of
5.10 with the patches that I use for writing xboot to xmega chips. I'm
going to revisit this at some point in the near future and post some
instructions for how to modify avrdude to support writing the xmega boot
block, but I unfortunately haven't gotten around to it yet. I believe
the patches will work on 5.11, though.
