Hi guys,

I have been looking at the constitution and note the following:

Currently, the interlink Editor is part of the Executive committee (EC) however, if a member is on the committee they can only stand for one position.

This may cause problems if we need to elect a new editor as somebody currently on the EC would not be able to be the Interlink Editor.

Looking at some old constitutions, I note that the interlink editor was not automatically on the committee. It would make sense to change our constitution to mirror that situation as, if Colin were to stand down and I wanted to take on the role of Editor, I would not be able to do so without relinquishing the post of treasurer. We all know how difficult it is to get a treasurer so it makes sense to change the constitution so that the Interlink editor is not automatically elected to the executive committee. There is no reason why the Interlink Editor cannot be co-opted to the committee after each AGM.

Finally, if an officer took on the role of editor, they would still only get one vote on the EC. if the Editor was not a current officer, they could be co-opted and have a vote on the EC.

hope that all makes sense, what do people think if you all agree I will Ask Lisa to make the necessary amendment to the draft constitution.

cheers

Greetings,

John, if the editor was co-opted instead of being elected to the committee,
would this in any way inhibit their standing?

What, if the editor did not want to be co-opted and do the job as an
ordinary member? What would happen if partway through the editor's tenyour
of presumably one year, they needed, say, for health reasons, to relinquish?

I think it’s a good idea to have a reasonably flexible constitution, so I would suggest that, while removing Interlink Editor from the list of committee posts, we give the committee power to co-opt a maximum of either one or two extra members in any single year without referring to the post of Interlink Editor. This would permit them to co-opt anyone they think would add value, which could include the Editor if he or she wished to be involved in this way.

I've just checked the draft and the following clause fully covers co-option.

9.7 Co-options - The Executive Committee shall be empowered to co-opt no more than two additional members between consecutive Annual General Meetings, each of whom may serve until the following Annual General Meeting.

Thus, if the committee wished, they could co-opt the magazine editor, so all that is needed is to delete that post from the list of committee roles.

Dear All

The clear wish to alter the Constitution so that the Interlink Editor post can potentially be held by a co-optee or somebody else on the Committee. I will take a look and come up with a solution.

With best regards
