Greetings,

I met plenty of these but never owned one, used it a few times but found the
voice somewhat arduous. Many reckoned it incredible, for it's time, apart
from the voice, I would agree. Quite a few members of the original AVHOW
and AVHT made fantastic use of this kit and certainly, in a few cases, could
never have worked if otherwise.

I suspect it is still being used by some, I imagine, others may still own
and use one occasionally, others may have put one away and forgotten all
about it, but this kit was not exactly cheap!

Please, AVIP members, let's have some feedback with your experiences,
however brief, with this amazing kit!!

Digital technology has repeatedly transformed the lives of blind people in
remarkable ways. Some devices were so groundbreaking that they are
rightfully regarded as true milestones today. One of these early devices we'd
like to introduce is the Eureka A4.
While the Eureka A4 did not yet feature an integrated Braille display, it
relied on the Braille writing system for input. This meant it could be
operated with far fewer keys than a conventional computer.
This clearly demonstrates how innovative Braille is not only as a reading
system, but also as a method of writing and input.

For our English-speaking readers, we've included a link to a short summary
from Computing history plus a video that shows the Eureka in action.

Hi Colin,

I first came across the Eureka A4 when I was at Queen Alexandra College in 1987. I didn't get to use it hat much but when I did, I found it to an okay piece of kit, well except for the voice.

One thing you could do with the Eureka, is get the temperature. This was fine but given the asking was black, this would surely have made the reading inaccurate.

Three years later, a friend of mine, still at ST. Vincent's School in Liverpool, had the use of a Eureka and had bought it home one day and I recall writing a word document on it.

It wasn't a machine I was tempted to buy but recognise that it was a very useful machine to have.

Paul.
