The best chocolate digestives, tried and tasted, received from Saga, 2026 03 06

Greetings,

I am partial to chocolate particularly dark rather than milk or white, I've
been advised dark chocolate is better for diabetics than any others,
especially if the cocoa content is high. I tend to enjoy chocolate in small
amounts, with a cocoa content of more than 75%, often found in the Fair
Trade brand.

I also like chocolate digestives, intend to read this article expecting to
enjoy the tought of my bikkie and mug of tea!

How do supermarket own brands compare to McVitie's iconic chocolate
digestive biscuit? To find out, Saga Magazine put them to the test.

1. Winner: Co-op Delightfully Dunkable Milk Chocolate Digestives

300g, RRP: £1.15

The biscuit was superb, almost on a par with McVitie's, with a lovely
sweetness and pleasantly crumbly texture. If the chocolate was a little more
generous and had more flavour, it would tick all the boxes.

But at this price, it's a superb alternative and many wouldn't notice the
difference!

Rating: 9/10

2. Waitrose Essential Milk Chocolate Digestives

300g, RRP: £1.30

Similar to McVitie's, crumbly with a pleasant texture, but a little too
crunchy. These looked great and tasted good too with an excellent chocolate
flavour.

An acceptable alternative and at a reasonable price.

Rating: 9/10

3. McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives

266g, RRP: £2.25

Despite being more expensive than own-label alternatives, the original
McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestive is the benchmark. Full of oaty texture,
it crumbles perfectly in the mouth and the rich chocolate flavour of the
generous topping lingers on the palate.

If money is no object, there's nothing better!

4. M&S Milk Chocolate Digestives

300g, RRP: £1.25

With a satisfying quantity of quality chocolate, these looked very
appetising. The biscuit had a pleasant grainy texture, but was still too
crunchy and lacked the melt-in-the-mouth sweetness of McVitie's.

Good but not outstanding.

Rating: 7/10

5. Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate Digestives

300g, RRP: £1.25

Smaller biscuits than the others but there were more in the packet. These
had a good consistency, despite being a little dry and lacking the sweet
crumbliness of McVitie's. The chocolate was good but not exceptional.

Perfectly palatable.

Rating: 7/10

6. Aldi Milk Chocolate Digestives

300g, RRP: 99p

This is more Rich Tea than Digestive, crispy and lacking in crumbliness and
sweetness.

The chocolate was disappointing and lacked depth with minimal lasting
aftertaste.

Rating: 6/10

7. Tesco Milk Chocolate Digestives

300g, RRP: £1.20

A crunchy, dry biscuit not a great example of a digestive and lacked any
meaningful flavour.

The chocolate was also bland which, combined with the biscuit, gave an
ordinary overall taste.

Rating: 6/10
