I tried to build Avian with OpenJDK and LZMA tonight under Ubuntu 17.10.  NOTHING worked.  The JDK is too new, the LZMA SDK is too new, none of the Java binaries are in the expected locations.  It's a mess.  I tried to fix what I could and eventually just quit.

I'm afraid no new users are going to adopt Avian if they have to spin up years old environments to make it work.  :-(

I'd love to fix it, but I just don't know enough about it.

Help?

Scott

Hi Scott,

Sorry you ran into so many issues.

As you may have noticed, there hasn't been much activity with Avian in
the past few years -- just little bug fixes here and there. Neither I
nor my current company use it, and I don't have much free time anymore
to devote to it beyond minimal maintenance.

I've been thinking about officially retiring the project and updating
the README.md accordingly, just so everyone knows the status. Of
course, any sufficiently motivated individual is welcome to fork it
and give it a bright new future.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but hopefully that helps explain
the current state of things.

Cheers,
Joel
